Avowed finally has a release date as per the Xbox Games Showcase, launching sometime next year.

Obsidian and Microsoft have been pretty tight-lipped aboutAvowed, despite it beingXbox’s “next big thing” after Starfield. That changed today as Xbox’s newest showcase gave us a better glimpse at this expansion of Pillar of Eternity’s world.

We saw more of the Living Lands, a section of the world of Eora. According to the Xbox Wire dropped after the reveal, “the Living Lands is home to bustling port towns and rolling hills adorned with weird and fantastical plant life […] Around every corner there are creatures, sentient mushrooms, or tribes of lizard-like Xaurips looking to make you their next meal”.

The trailer was also narrated by a character called Kai, “the first of a cast of companions who will accompany you”. Kai is a Coastal Aumua who lives in the Living Lands - the perfect place for it, really. Obsidian describes him as “a former soldier” with an “idealistic and pragmatic temperament”.

Throughout the reveal, we saw more of the fantasy gameplay firsthand. Unlike Pillars of Eternity, we’re plopped into a first-person viewpoint with fighting more akin to The Elder Scrolls, something that has led many to describe Avowed as Obsidian’s own take on Skyrim. Fitting considering it developed The Outer Worlds, which was, in many ways, a spiritual successor to Fallout.

“First-person combat has been a huge focus for us,” Obsidian wrote. “We’ve incorporated a host of ways for players to fight the flora and fauna of the Living Lands. You will have swords, shields, pistols, magical spells, and more at your disposal, including the ability to dual wield, creating a vast number of combinations to choose from.

With combat so full of possibility, diversity in choice will be needed as you explore the treacherous Living Lands. Home to the Xuarips, plagued undead, and dangerous flora, this island is full of unique enemies to encounter.”

We don’t know exactly when we can expect to get our hands on Avowed, other than it launching in 2024, but we do know what platforms it’s coming to. you may grab it on Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and Windows 10 and 11. It’ll be free on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass on day one.

In the meantime, you can pick up Starfield this September, which will no doubt completely devour hundreds of hours given its expansive explorable galaxy. That should be enough to tie you over, but if not, the rest of the year is jam-packed. We have Mortal Kombat 1, Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Final Fantasy 16, Armored Core 6, Baldur’s Gate 3, Spider-Man 2, and so many more to look forward to.
