Strafing is a big part of shooting games, so crabs would be perfectly suited to them, as shown inCrab Champions. This funny roguelike game came out on April Fool’s, but there’s no joke to the amount of positive response it’s received.

As a nameless crab that has learned to dual-wield all sorts of firearms, your mission is to clear all the islands of hostile entities, including bugs, skulls, and other crabs. It’s a colorful and fast-paced game that’s easy to jump into but will quickly ramp up in terms of difficulty. To be the best crab, you need to start strong.

Practice Jumping

If you’ve seen any clips of pro and competitive FPS players, you’ll note how much jumping and crouching they do to avoid being shot. Since you’re already a crab, you can’t really crouch. You’ll need to jump to stay mobile and avoid getting bogged down with enemies and projectiles. However, the gameplay makes it so thatyour crab will do a different kind of jump based on direction.

Your aim and movement controls are separate,so if you double-jump to the left or right, you’ll do a short air dash, while forward or back results in a flip. Take some time toget a feel for jumping both with and without moving your aimat the same time so that you don’t get disoriented.

Always Check Behind You

Your crab will always spawnon an island surrounded by water and an invisible barrier. The spawn point will usually be on one of the sides of the island or a random point in the center. A few seconds after spawning, enemies will also start spawning and dropping into the arena.

You’ll always see a group of them in whatever starting direction you’re facing, which will immediately draw your attention. However, this is a trick since enemies can also spawn to the sides and out of viewbefore charging right toward you. To avoid an ambush, do a quick 180-degree turn when you spawn.

Pick Up Any Aura Upgrades

In typical roguelike fashion, completing each room nets you a chest that gives you a selection of upgrades to peruse. They cover quite a wide range of effects, fromgiving elemental damage to attacks to changing how your ammo behaves. Still, there’s an upgrade that can have some very useful benefits.

These are Aura upgrades that can affect the environment and enemies in numerous ways. Even though your aura range is invisible,it’s much larger than you think, which makes it even more effectivein these contained islands' arenas.

Eliminate Slugs First

You may be playing as a crab fighting other crabs, but they’re not the only enemies in your way. A variety of large insects, weird creatures, and giant flying skullswill track you from afar. Despite this, there’s one type of enemy you should be extra vigilant about: the slug.

These large squishy entities move much faster than any slug you’ve ever seen anduse sapper tactics, exploding in damaging AoE blasts once they get close enough. Luckily, their bright colors and size make them easy to pick out from a distance. When you spot them, blast them quickly before they get in range.

Thoroughly Check Islands After Clearing

The two main types of arenas are standard and survival. In the former, you have to eliminate a set number of enemiesto clear it; in the latter, you have to survive constantly spawning in enemiesfor a set amount of time. Getting to the end of each result in a slow-motion victory screen before a chest appears for you to collect your reward and move on.

However, you’re not forced to collect and leave immediately. After clearing the island, you should explore the now-safe area for any deposits of Crystalsso that you’ll have extra to spend whenever you arrive at a shop.

Always Keep Crabs In Front Of You

Though slugs are very dangerous, crabs are annoying and persistent. The red crabs are the weakest variants, limited only to melee attacks. Other types of crabs can be larger and more mobile while equipped with their own firearms. While the crabs can blend and group together, you should not take them lightly.

The red crabs will constantly chase you; if you get too far away, they will leap at you while swiping with their claws. They move quickly through the air, soalways keep groups and individual crabs in front of youso they can’t surprise flank you.
