The Flagellant is one of the most unique classes inDarkest Dungeon 2, both in terms of his moveset and the extra features he brings to the party - for better or for worse. Played correctly, he’s arguably the most reliable and versatile character in the game. He can tank, heal, and dole out impressive damage with his Blight powers - though not usually all at the same time.

Toxic Meltdowns

The Flagellant does not suffer Meltdowns or become Resolute when his Stress hits ten. Instead, hegains a Toxic tokenuntil the end of the battle. Repeated Meltdowns can cause him to gain up to three Toxic tokens, but beware - each time he becomes Toxic, the Flagellantloses two Relationship points with each of the other Heroes.

Whenever the Flagellant is hit by an enemy attack, that enemy is inflicted withtwo stacks of Blight for every Toxic token that the Flagellant has.Keeping his Stress at critical levels, then unleashing a Toxic Meltdown at the beginning of a boss fight, is a great way to get free damage on your foes - just be sure to fix his Relationships as best you can when you reach the Inn.

Best Builds For Each Flagellant Path

The Flagellant tends to use many of the same Skills on most adventures, but his Pathsdrastically alter the way his key powers work. This makes him one of the most complicated classes to include in your party, but once you’ve learned each Path the Flagellant can fit in almost any lineup.

Wanderer

At his most basic, the Flagellant’s strategy revolves aroundattacking with Punish and Acid Rainto load up enemies with Blight. When his HP gets low, have him use Lash’s Gift to buff an ally, or switch him to a somewhat risky tanking role with More! MORE!

Sepsis is the Flagellant’s signature ability - it offers an excellent healing factor and places heavy Blight on a single target.

Maniac

If your setup doesn’t support a Blight-heavy strategy, the Maniac Path focuses the Flagellant’s efforts on inflicting debuffs instead. Again, he’ll be doing a lot of attacking to place Weakness and Vulnerability tokens on enemies, while the Maniac’s modified Lash’s Gift lets him take on the negative tokens of other Heroes.

Once the Maniac is debuffed to the point of incapacity, use Sepsis tosend all those negative tokens to an enemybefore going in for the kill.

Exanimate

The Exanimate is all about Blight damage. Paired with an Alchemist Plague doctor or Venomdrop Graverobber (or both!) you can take passively take huge chunks out of enemy health bars. Many of this Path’s bonuses only triggerif the Flagellant is below half HP, so this build can be something of a balancing act.

The Exanimate’s version of Sepsiscan deal high double-digit damageagainst an enemy that’s been sufficiently set up. It alsosets the Flagellant’s HP to just below fifty percent, leaving him in a sweet spot to start Blighting his next victim.

Scourge

The Scourge is the Flagellant’s support Path, especially notable for hisdouble-dip Deathless! Team him up with the Plague Doctor, and your Heroes will stay healthy throughout most of the run. Trypulling damage effects off of allies with Suffer, then having the Plague Doctor remove them from the Flagellant all at once with Battlefield Medicine!

you may also steal Bleed stacks from an ally toset him up for the Runaway to Cauterize his wounds.

Secret Boss - Death

This section contains spoilers.

When you complete the Flagellant’s story at the Hero Shrine, you’ll discover that the Flagellant oncedefeated the spirit of Death in combat, ensuring that no matter how badly his body was damaged by his self-induced suffering, he would not die. Death has never forgotten this slight, and she will occasionally try to claim the Flagellant’s overdue soul.

Very rarely, when you win a battle while the Flagellant is in your party, you’ll be immediatelythrust into a second battle against Death herself.Death is a powerful boss with 80 HP and ahigh Bleed Resistance.Unlike when you fought her in the Hero Shrine, she has a fairly normal Blight Resistance, giving the Flagellant a fighting chance against her - especially now that he has other Heroes fighting alongside him.

Death hits hard andinflicts your party with Bleed and Horror, and she can alsoshuffle your formationwith her Trample ability. Unlike most enemies, Death can move to the rear positions of the battlefield even though she doesn’t have any allies to hide behind. For this reason, she may not always be targetable with the attacks that you want.

The Flagellanthas his Death Resistance reduced by fiftyduring this battle, so keep his HP up!

Defeating Death allows you toclaim her head, a powerful Trinket that grants buffs to the wearer when they are at Death’s Door. It’s easilyone of the best Trinkets in the game, but Death isn’t ever guaranteed to appear, so you can’t count on finding it.
