TheNintendo Switchis a unique console compared to itsPlayStationandXboxcounterparts for a number of reasons. While its exclusives and the ability to play it on the go are the two big ones, its accompanying amiibo figures are another. Not used by all Switch owners which is a shame as not only do they often unlock fun extras in certain games, but they’re also decorative whenever they’re not being used.
RELATED:Best Super Smash Bros. Amiibo Figures
Pretty much all ofNintendo’s heavy hitters have their own selections of amiibos. That naturally includesMarioand all of his friends and enemies in the Mushroom Kingdom. Being Nintendo’s biggest deal, Mario and co. may well have more amiibos than any other series or character. If you’re looking to pick up some of them, we’ve selected a few of the very best out there right now for you to peruse and choose, saving you the trouble of having to sift through everything Nintendo has to offer.
Super Mario Amiibo
It’s-a-miibo, Mario!
Older than the Switch itself, a bog-standard Super Mario amiibo is really the perfect place to start. Or the perfect figure to buy if you’re only going to get one.
Yes, I know some of you reading this on the hunt for some more interesting amiibos will be rolling your eyes right about now, but this is a list of the best Mario amiibos. It only makes sense that we kick things off with the standard Super Mario figure. If you’re here to start a collection or buy a gift for someone who is starting theirs, then this is where you begin. Mario should be at the center of any and all amiibo collections, regardless of size, and what better Mario to have than one that looks like the version of Mario you think of as soon as you hear his name?
Cat Mario And Cat Peach Amiibo Set
Super Meow-rio
Yes, they can be bought separately, but just like picking a kitten from a litter, it just doesn’t seem right to separate them.
Yes, I know I’m technically cheating here, but when I discovered Cat Mario and Cat Peach’s amiibos are available as a twin pack, I couldn’t resist. Like so many other Mario fans, I was very excited to see Mario become a cat inSuper Mario 3D World. An excitement that wasn’t replicated until Mario morphed into an elephant in the Wonder trailer. Until Elephant Mario inevitably becomes an amiibo, the very best option is him and Peach together as cats. Perhaps Elephant Mario’s amiibo will be here in time for this list’s 2024 update.
Piranha Plant Amiibo
Snappy Window Dressing
Enemies need amiibos too. Even ones as insignificant as Piranha Plant. Too harsh? Help me make up for it by adding the poor little guy to your collection.
If there’s a series of video games with low-level villains more iconic than the ones you can find throughout the Super Mario games, then I am yet to experience it. If I were to show my mom a Piranha Plant, I’m fairly confident she’d say something like, “Aren’t those the flowers that try to eat Mario?” and whether a mum recognizes something from a video game is the real acid test. As for why you should grab the Piranha Plant amiibo, it does cool stuff to the character inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, but it is going to cost you.
Wedding Bowser Amiibo
Peaches, Peaches, Peaches Peaches Peaches
Bowser really pulled out all the stops when it came to his wedding outfit in Super Mario Odyssey. Maybe he really was in love with Princess Peach that time.
One of the most impressive things about almost 40 years of Mario games is Nintendo’s ability to basically tell the same story over and over again but keep us coming back for more. Bowser kidnaps Peach, and you assume the role of Mario to rescue her. The best telling of that story to date may well have been inSuper Mario Odyssey. Not only because it’s a fantastic game, but because Bowser really pulled out all the stops when it came to his wedding suit. Smart as hell, it makes for a pretty neat amiibo.
30th Anniversary Mario Modern Color Amiibo
OG Look Overhauled
Nintendo did something very special to celebrate Mario turning 30. It turned the plumber’s original look into an amiibo, and it may well be the coolest amiibo look Mario has ever had.
When you have a mascot as popular as Mario at your disposal, you celebrate every single anniversary they have. When Mario turned 30 a while ago, one of the ways Nintendo celebrated was by creating a couple of amiibos depicting how its original plumber looked in his very first game. My personal favorite is the one that has modern colors added to it. The only problem is it’s going to cost you a lot of money since the figure was limited edition and most of those who own them naturally don’t really want to part with them.
Rosalina Amiibo
More Luma Love After The Mario Movie
Rosalina is a terrific Mushroom Kingdom character who doesn’t get nearly enough love. Change that by picking up her amiibo which comes complete with a little Luma.
Not introduced untilSuper Mario Galaxy, Rosalina doesn’t tend to get as much love as she deserves. Even though she was nowhere to be seen inThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, the short but memorable role an imprisoned Luma made in the film might well mean Rosalina gets a starring role in the sequel. Until then, celebrate the character in amiibo form, but again, the rarity of this figure means it’s going to cost you to make it a part of our collection. The next entry won’t have that potentially annoying asterisk alongside it, promise.
Luigi Amiibo
Victory Pose!
Luigi’s an odd one, and that oddness is perfectly captured in this amiibo. One where he is pulling off his weird Smash victory pose which, as far as I can tell, has never been officially explained.
Weird, odd, different, quirky. Whatever word you use to describe Luigi, we all love him. As for that quirkiness, nothing encapsulates it better than the pose he is striking in this amiibo. Those of you who play Smash Ultimate will likely recognize it as the pose Luigi pulls when he wins. It’s a pose he has been using for at least three Smash games to my knowledge, and even after some light research, I still have no idea why. Keep being you Luigi, and I’ll keep buying your amiibos and using you to waste fools in Smash.
Green Yarn Yoshi Amiibo
Woolly Little Dinosaur
Yarn Yoshi from the criminally underrated Yoshi’s Woolly World. Somehow making Yoshi even cuter and available in three different colors.
You really didn’t think I was going to write this entire list without any mention of Yoshi, did you? Mario’s dinosaur buddy is one of my favorite things about the Mushroom Kingdom, hence my disappointment when he wasn’t included in the movie. Well other than the herd of them that stampedes past very briefly and the… wait, is it okay to talk about spoilers yet? I won’t for the ten people who still haven’t seen the Mario movie who might be reading this. As for this amiibo, a figure made of yarn somehow makes Yoshi even cuter than he already is. The only problem is you’re probably going to want all three versions of this one.
FAQ
What Do The Mario Amiibos Do?
Mario amiibos all have different uses. Some of the above will unlock different and unique outfits in certain Mario games, while others will unlock characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Tap your amiibo on your Switch to see what it can do for you.
What Is The Rarest Amiibo?
While some of the amiibos included on this list are pretty pricey, none of them crack the top ten of the figures that are currently considered to be the rarest. Mega Man Gold Edition and Mega Yarn Yoshi are considered to be two of the most sought-after amiibos right now.
Is It Better To Keep Amiibos In Their Boxes?
While most collectibles are more valuable when kept in their boxes, doing that with amiibos kind of defeats the point of owning them. The main reason for buying them is so they can be used to get in-game items which usually can’t be achieved without removing them from their packaging.
