There hasn’t been a mainline Croc game since Jun 30, 2025. And while it sold as well asBanjo Kazooie, the trilogyfaded into obscurityover the years, but that might change as it’s coming back with a HD remaster. In response to a tweet from GamesIndustry.biz editor-in-chief James Batchelor, who was sharing an article he had written forTime Extensionabout “The Making Of: Croc” while also calling for a remaster, Argonaut founder Jez San revealed they have an update on the series.RELATED:Every Legacy Remake Should Follow The Metroid Prime Model"I have news but it’s a little premature to announce it," San said. “a ‘Croc HD’ has started early development.”
Croc launched in 1997 and received a sequel only two years later, while a third game was planned but never came to fruition. Since then, there have been a few mobile games such as Jungle Rumble, Pinball, and Volcanic Panic!, but the last of these was released in 2006. As such, there hasn’t been a Croc game in 17 years. Maybe a HD remaster is just what it needs to get a new game off the ground, not unlike the Crash trilogy remake leading intoCrash Bandicoot 4.
Croc is a ’90s platformer that started out as a prototype for a 3DMariogame in which you would have played Yoshi. Once you know, it’s pretty obvious looking at the designs side-by-side. It sold over three million copies, but as Argonaut was “going through a rough patch,” the aptly titled Croc 3 fell apart. It would have seen Croc return to his family and train other crocodiles to go off on their own adventures. This meant itwas being developed as an online multiplayer gamefor the original Xbox. There were even plans to make a Croc animated TV series at Fox, but these likewise never came to anything.
The first Croc, which is the game getting a HD remaster, told the story of an orphan crocodile raised by creatures known as Gobbos. Things fell apart when Baron Dante took over their archipelago and kidnapped all the Gobbos, including their leader, King Rufus. You, playing as Croc, are tasked with saving all the Gobbos and defeating Dante. It’s a pretty simple story, but not too dissimilar toSpyrowhere we have to free every dragon and defeat Gnasty Gnorc.
