NetherRealm is finally lifting the lid onMortal Kombat 1in two days during the Summer Game Fest witha gameplay reveal, but Ed Boon is teasing even more than that. “Some making their way back into action…” he tweeted with a dragon emoji, attaching a photo of the Mortal Kombat 4 roster.Fans have quickly taken to the quote retweets and comments to share all the characters they hope to see in Mortal Kombat 1’s line-up, but it feels like Ed Boon is teasing someone specific - Jarek. He debuted in Mortal Kombat 4, but hasn’t been seen in any of the NetherRealm games. He appeared in an MKX comic and cameoed in MK11, but that was it.RELATED:There Has Never Been A Better Time For Mileena To Get A Happy EndingThat fits the “making their way back into action” tease, since Jarek hasn’t been playable since Special Forces in 2000. I wasn’t even born yet when he was last playable. But to take the theory a step further, Boon attached a dragon emoji and Jarek is from the Black Dragon clan. It all comes together nicely, except for the fact Jarek was never a popular character. NetherRealm has its work cut out if it wants to make him a popular pick.
Jarek was also a student of Kano, so his appearance would likely mean that Kano is also in Mortal Kombat 1. That’s a given at this point since he’s an original character and appeared in MK9, MKX, and MK11, even iffans don’t want it.Regardless, it’s hard to read the tweet as teasing anyone other than Jarek, but that hasn’t stopped fans from sharing who they hope it to be.
Picks range from Reptile to Kai to Tanya, while others believe Ed Boon is teasing another Mortal Kombat 4 debut - Reiko. He was a general in Shao Kahn’s army, hence his similar outfit, and likewise hasn’t appeared in any of the NetherRealm games outside of cameos. That doesn’t explain the dragon emoji, but Boon does say “some”, so it’s likely that more than just one member of MK4’s roster is returning.
Aside from teasing a returning character, Ed Boon also tweeted about the upcoming gameplay reveal, hinting that it’s far more than just a quick glimpse. This is something that was backed up byGeoff Keighleywho replied, “Let’s just say this ain’t a 60 second teaser trailer”.
We only have two days to wait, so we’ll find out soon enough who’s returning to the world of Mortal Kombat. Who knows, maybe NetherRealm will work some magic and make Jarek a new fan favourite.
