Ed Boon likes to troll fans - that’s hardly a secret by now. But withMortal Kombat 1’s release date fast approaching, it’s possible that he just gave us a huge tease for other characters joining the roster - one that would see all theMortal Kombatninjas reunited for the first time in years. Over on Twitter, Boon just shared a tweet from a fan hoping that all the male ninjas are on the same roster. While he doesn’t explicitly confirm anything, he does say that this “could very well be the case”. So far, Ermac and Reptile are the only missing fighters making this possible, meaning that Boon could be hinting that they’ll be confirmed closer to release.Related:There Has Never Been A Better Time For Mileena To Get A Happy EndingUnderstandably, this exchange has fans hyped, excited by the prospect of the whole ninja crew being together once again. This hasn’t happened since Mortal Kombat (2011), the last time the timeline was reset, so it’s not surprising to see fans hope this is the case.
It would also make a lot of sense from a narrative standpoint. The reason all the ninjas were shoved into MK9 was likely because they needed to be established in this new timeline. The same could be said for MK1 now, as all the ninjas have the chance to get a new backstory and characterisation, no longer held back by any pre-established lore.
If Reptile and Ermac are planned for the roster, it isn’t too surprising that they weren’t shown off yet.The most recent ninja revealscame as part of a dedicated Lin Kuei trailer - a group neither Reptile nor Ermac belong to. If they’re loosely sticking to their usual origins, then the pair will likely be announced in relation to some kind of Outworld shenanigans.
But of course, that wouldn’t be enough to bringallof the ninjas into the fold. There’s also Tremor and Noob Saibot, even if they weren’t included in the image Boon retweeted. In the case of Noob, it’s pretty simple: he’s kinda already in the game. Noob is the resurrected form of Bi-Han - the original, more villainous Sub-Zero. Given that Bi-Han still has the Sub-Zero mantle for now, we probably won’t see him as Noob in MK1. As for Tremor, he’s rarely included in the male ninja lineup since he was the only one not to make it into at least one of the retro games. He instead made his debut in the spin-off game, Special Forces, and is rarely playable in the mainline games.
Still, nothing can be ruled out just yet. Almost everything about MK1 has come as a surprise, even the name itself. We were calling it MK12 for years, but nope, instead we have a title that makes Google very confused. In any case, MK1 will be with us on September 19.
