Inthe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, there are some baffling ways you can get around Hyrule; whether it’s through overly complicated Zonai engineering or literal teleportation, you can get just about anywhere on the map. Mounting various creatures may seem much less bizarre in comparison, but it does beg the question of what creatures you can ride (however long that may end up being).

Some options, like the bear, are surprisingly humorous, while others, like the horse, are standard but still fun. Only a handful of creatures can be mounted, but you might end up being surprised by some.

6Lynel

Being able to mount a creature and being able to tame it are two completely different ballparks, and nobody makes that clearer than the Lynel. You can never tame a Lynel (as cool as that would be), but you can mount them.

You can ride in from your paraglider, but you’ll cut into your stamina to take this safer route, which means you likely won’t be able to stay on their backs as long. If you don’t want to cut into your stamina and are willing to take more of a risk, put on theLynel Maskand some stealthy close and sneak up from behind to hop on and hack away at the Lynel’s back.

It’s the safest way to deal damage, but getting back on is incredibly difficult after the battle starts.

5Deer And Stags

If you happen to run across a pack of deer or stags, and you’re tired of tromping all around Hyrule on foot (or in whatever vehicle you’ve managed to build), then you should consider sneaking up and jumping onto the back of one. These animals are incredibly skittish, so it might be difficult or a little bit of a hassle, but as soon as you get on, you’re set and can continue on your way.

However, as soon as you hop off, they’ll run for the hills and despawn. It’s also worth noting that they only have two speeds (slow and fast) and are incredibly difficult to control.

Often, they’ll veer off the path and try to go in whatever direction they please, no matter how many times Link corrects them or gently pats their necks to reassure them.

There is one side quest associated with them at the Outskirt Stable, so it’s unlikely you’ll ever ride them again. Most of the time, they’re just too much of a pain to dedicate the time to finding and getting on.

4Bears

Bears can be rather vicious if you catch them off guard (though they will, sometimes, charge at you before you’ve realized they’re there). They are generally found in wooded areas, so you might want to consider climbing a tree if one comes after you.

Of course, if you don’t want to climb a tree, you could always consider climbing onto their backs; verify you hurry, though, because if given enough time, they’ll run away at full speed, and attempt to catch up to them can be a pain. Bears generally aren’t around other creatures that could tip them off to your presence, which makes them slightly easier to sneak up to and mount.

Like deer, however, bears only have two speeds: slow and fast, and when they’re going either speed, they are difficult to direct and nudge in the right direction. However, they look much cooler to ride and tromp around Hyrule with for at least a bit.

3Stalhorses

Stalhorses are a joy to find, especially if you tend to revel a bit more in the macabre. These skeletal horses aremostly found in the Depthswith monstrous riders, or you can find them at the Sanidin Park Ruins at night, just to the north of Outskirt Stable.

One of the stable hands at Outskirt Stable will likely direct you to them as part of a quest, so if you are undertaking this side quest, you really shouldn’t dally. These creatures are some of the coolest-looking creatures in the game, period, but they have one downfall: at five in the morning every day, they will collapse and disappear.

If you’re not expecting this, it can be absolutely horrifying. If you are expecting it, it’s still horrifying.

2Sandseals

Although you don’t ride Sandseals in the traditional way you would ride any of the other mountable creatures in Tears of the Kingdom, you may still technically mount and ride them, just with the help of aSledor a shield. UnlikeThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you can actually use sleds instead of your shield to ride Sandseals.

Not having to use your shield means that you won’t lose durability, and you don’t risk having your shield break in the middle of riding around the desert. The only thing that’s a little bit disappointing about the Sandseals (but does, ultimately, make sense) is that you’re able to’t ride them outside of the desert.

Their range is limited to the desert (a very small portion of Hyrule). For that, they can only take second place.

1Horses

Horses are the classic mountable creature in the Legend of Zelda, and they’re customizable to boot. Plus, they’re the only creatures you’re able to actually register at a stable, and they come in a wide enough variety that it’s hard to be upset about that.

If you want a mount in Tears of the Kingdom, you should probably look for a horse. It doesn’t matter if it’s a wild horse, one you picked up from a quest, one you stole from your enemy, or if it was brought over from Breath of the Wild.

All that matters is that it’s alive and that the Stable you register it at would legally define it as a horse. Some horses are, admittedly, much better than others (quest horses tend to be significantly better than whatever wild horse you pick up off the side of the road), but all horses are still good and therefore are the best mounts in Hyrule.
