The Sages play an important role inThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s story, helping Link to vanquish the Demon King. The game’s narrative transcends multiple time periods, showing the original Sages fighting during the Imprisoning War and their descendants supporting Link in the present.
By completing Tears of the Kingdom’s different temples, you discover the Secret Stones needed to awaken the Sages. They join you inthe form of avatars, or as a construct in the case of Mineru, to help you on your adventure. Although united in a single cause, each Sage is different from the others, hailing from various areas of Hyrule and possessing powerful gifts.

7Sage Of Fire: Yunobo
InBreath of the Wild, Yunobo was easily frightened and reluctant to face danger head-on; however, in Tears of the Kingdom,he shows more bravery, fighting alongside Link to destroy the Marbled Gohma in the heart of Death Mountain. When you first encounter Yunobo, he’s acting out of character, using his authority as the President of YunoboCo to mine for the dangerous Marbled Rock Roast.
Link is able to destroy the mask affecting Yunobo’s personality, restoring him to his usual self. After completing the Fire Temple, Yunobo awakens as the Sage of Fire, with Link being able to use his avatar to roll into rocks and monsters.
Yunobo has changed a lot since Breath of the Wild, with his new-found confidence allowing him to stand up as the Sage of Fire against the Demon King.
6Sage Of Spirit: Mineru
You’re first introduced to Mineru through the Dragon’s Tears memories, where Link can see events that occurred during Hyrule’s founding. The Zonai Sage of Spirit, Mineru helped to seal away Ganondorf alongside her younger brother Rauru, but was sadly mortally injured.
Using her spirit abilities as well as her knowledge of Zonai technology, Mineru is able to communicate with Link, instructing him to make a construct for her spirit to inhabit and expanding on the game’s story by personally recounting the events of the Imprisoning War. Mineru feels responsible for bringing the Secret Stones to Hyrule, one of which isstolen by Ganondorfand used by him to become The Demon King, fuelling her desire to help Link in the future.
5Sage Of Water: Sidon
Sidon is a cheerful Zorawho fights alongside Link to clear Zora’s Domain of the sludge falling from the sky. After completing the Water Temple with Sidon, he awakens as the Sage of Water, vowing to help Link take on the Demon King.
Sidon’s powers allow him to control water, which he uses to purify the water source running to Zora’s Domain. Having proven his dedication to his people by removing the threat of the Muktorok, his father, Dorephan, crowns Sidon as King of the Zora.
Sidon sees Link as his most treasured friend, and he’s always a welcome face to see on your adventure.
4Sage Of Lightning: Riju
Despite her young age, Riju is a capable fighter and the steadfast leader of the Gerudo. In Tears of the Kingdom, the Gerudo people have been forced underground because of the sand shroud and Gibdos prowling the desert.
You help Riju to save Gerudo Town from hordes of Gibdos, using her lightning abilities to destroy the undead monsters.
During this, Riju’s prowess as chief shines through as she commands the Gerudo guards with expertise and confidence. It’s clear to see that her people respect her and follow her leadership with trust. Once you kill Queen Gibdo, Riju takes up the mantle of the Sage of Lightning, honoring the legacy of Urbosa by helping Link.
3Sage Of Wind: Tulin
Unlike Yunobo, Sidon, and Riju, Tulin is a new companion for Link, having been a young chick during the events of Breath of the Wild. In Tears of the Kingdom, Tulin has grown; however, he still has some learning to do.
By helping Link to reach the Wind Temple, Tulin learns the value of teamwork, becoming the Sage of Wind and earning the title of Rito Warrior.
Tulin is determined to become a helpful ally to Link and a strong warrior worthy of his father’s legacy. He has big ambitions and remains positive, even in the face of adversity, supporting Link every step of the way.
2Sage Of Light: Rauru
Rauru is a Zonai who founded Hyrule alongside his wife Sonia. To stop Ganondorf, Rauru sacrificed himself, sealing the Demon King beneath Hyrule Castle.
Even as a spirit, Rauru helps Link, giving him his right arm when Link becomes damaged by Ganondorf’s Gloom and being his guide through the Great Sky Island.
As the king of Hyrule and the Sage of Light, Rauru leads the other Sages in the fight against Ganondorf and is willing to do anything to protect his people. Through memories, you’re able to see Rauru’s relationship with Sonia and how he connects with Zelda, showing his compassionate nature.
1Sage Of Time: Zelda
Although Princess Zelda is spirited away to the distant past at the beginning of Tears of the Kingdom, she has an integral part to play in the game’s story. Through collectingthe Dragon’s Tears, Link is able to witness Zelda helping to stop Ganondorf with the other Sages, awakening as a Sage herself in the process.
To imbue theMaster Swordwith sacred light and help Link defeat Ganondorf once and for all, Zelda consumes her Secret Stone, becoming the immortal Light Dragon as a result. Although she isn’t physically journeying with Link, her importance is felt throughout the story.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to the Nintendo Switch hit Breath of the Wild. In it, Link must team up with Princess Zelda to rid Hyrule of another threat to its existence.
