At long last, we’vefinallygot a real look at the new, long-awaitedFablegame. This comes after three years of radio silence, with nothing but a short CG teaser to go on. Now, we have a better idea of what the game will actually look like, and howXboxwill be reviving this iconic series after such a long hiatus.
And, uh, the trailer is not what we were expecting. In the two-minute tease, we get a peek at our new hero, what could be gameplay… and a massive Richard Ayoade. Yes, really. In true Fable fashion, we have a much-loved British celebrity in a major role. Only this time, he’s bigger than ever. Literally.

Check out the trailer below, in all of its daft fantasy glory. And we really do mean daft.
It’s not totally clear where this Fable game fits into the other three mainline entries, or if this even fits in at all. Indeed, it seems that the game will just be called Fable, not Fable 4, so this could be a complete reboot. That being said, there’s British humour and chicken kicking, so it’s very much in the style of the old games, even if it doesn’t tie into the lore as much as longtime fans would like.
As promised by Xbox in the run-up to today’s showcase, this new Fable trailer shows in-engine game footage, which hopefully means it represents what we’ll be playing whenever it launches. While the trailer isn’t giving us much of a gameplay reveal just yet, we do get a better idea of the tone Playground is going for which as most Fable fans will know, is just as important as how the combat will work.
Fable is being developed by Playground Games, best known for theForzaseries. This comes after the studio behind all of the previous games, Lionhead, was shut down byMicrosoftback in 2016, also cancelling Fable Legends. Therefore, this Fable revival will be the first game in the series since Fable: The Journey in 2012 and the first mainline entry since Fable 3 in 2010.
There had been some fear in the fanbase that this revival would be scrapped, given how long we’ve had to wait for another trailer after the initial teaser. These fears were only exacerbated by reports thatdevelopment wasn’t going particularly smoothly, with the team reportedly struggling to decide which direction to take the game in. There was talk of it being similar to The Witcher 3,something which divided the fanbase. Now, it seems that this Witcher influence will come in other areas of the game - if it’s there at all - because we didn’t really pick up on that in this teaser.
