For a long time, it’s been widely accepted amongst Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts fans that Donald Duck is the most powerful mage ever to exist, mainly due to his use of the stupidly powerful Zettaflare spell towards the end ofKingdom Hearts 3. This spell is one step up from Teraflare, a spell which was used in Final Fantasy 14 that was so powerful that it completely wiped out the base game, giving the developers a canonical reason to let them bin everything and start again from scratch.

Now you’re armed with this information, you can see how it was pretty surprising for Donald Duck of all characters to bust out Zettaflare and establish himself as the most powerful character in Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts lore. However, now thatFinal Fantasy 16has arrived and delivered a whole new cast of characters, a new challenger has arrived to provide Donald with some much needed competition (thanksKotaku).Be warned, we’re heading into spoiler territory for all of you that haven’t finished Final Fantasy 16 just yet.

Quite a ways into Final Fantasy 16, you’ll trade blows with Bahamut while playing as Ifrit. Throughout the fight, Bahamut cycles through all of the flare attacks in an attempt to take you down, seemingly ending with a big ol' Teraflare as he gets desperate. After a little cutscene, the fight continues on, as a now powered up Bahamut then takes to space with Ifrit in tow. It’s here where Bahamut attempts to cast his Zettaflare, officially becoming the second ever character to use the spell, and the first in the Final Fantasy series.

I won’t tell you how the fight plays out to save at least some of the mystery for those of you that have ignored the spoiler warning, but suffice to say it’s an incredibly hype moment and one of the best that Final Fantasy 16 has to offer. However, now that Final Fantasy 16’s version of Bahamut has shown itself capable of casting Zettaflare, we now have to determine which of him or Donald Duck is the most powerful, and I think I have the answer.

It’s clear during the initial fight that Bahamut lacks the natural ability to cast Zettaflare, as only until Bahamut consumes Aether is he powerful enough to use the spell. On the other hand, Donald Duck casts it completely out of the blue, suggesting he has the natural ability to use it, but was just saving it for a dire situation. Therefore, Donald Duck’s powers as a mage are more potent than Bahamut’s. I’m now going to go kick a football to try and balance out the levels of nerdiness that has occured here today.
