Final Fantasy 16’s full launch is still a week away, but after its demo dropped at the end of last week, a lot of people have been trying the game out early. There’s a lot packed into the demo, including a pretty cool nod toFinal Fantasy 10.

If you’re not familiar with the specific moment in Final Fantasy 10 that is subtly referenced in the demo, you will have no idea you experienced it. In fact, even if you have played through that moment you may well have missed it. StreamerPeachMilky_didn’t. Hearing Clive’s whistle, they immediately knew where they had heard it before.

Playing the demo on stream earlier this week, you see PeachMilky’s eyes light up. “That sounded exactly like the whistle from 10,” they exclaim, posting a clip on Twitter shortly after that includes the sound they’re referring to. Not only is it so similar that it is most definitely an easter egg, but it sounds likeSquare Enixmay have even used the same sound file.

PeachMilky clearly got a little bit of stick in the comments while streaming, likely due to the immediacy with which they were able to pinpoint a whistle from a game that launched more than 20 years ago. Quickly defending themselves by claiming the whistle is important, they’re not wrong. Not only is Yuna taught to whistle by Tidus, but there’s a convoluted, and in some circles still disputed, way to get one of Final Fantasy 10’s various endings by hitting X at just the right time, or multiple times, during a certain whistle.

There are naturally connections linking most, if not allFinal Fantasygames. Chocobos, for example, which have been in just about every instalment in the series since they were introduced in Final Fantasy 2. They’re actuallyreferred to as horses in the Japanese version of Final Fantasy 16, a creative decision explained by its creators last month.

Even though there are threads running throughout the games, Square confirmed this week that they aren’t all taking place in one big shared universe. The only time multiple Final Fantasy games share the same world are when they have multiple instalments likeFinal Fantasy 7. That means Clive and Yuna’s whistles sounding exactly the same is canonically just one big coincidence.

Final Fantasy 16 launches exclusively onPS5on June 06, 2025, and the demo is free to play right now.
