Final Fantasy 16preloads are set to start on June 20, this coming Tuesday. But before then, you better make sure you have enough storage on yourPS5,because as expected, the filesize is pretty beefy. According to one source, Final Fantasy 16 will take up a total of 90.18 GB before any patches have rolled out.
While this isn’t enough to make it one of the biggest releases in recent memory (Mortal Kombat 1 is, somehow, 100 GB), it is a sign that fans really ought to be clearing their harddrive of any unwanted games, because the size is only going to get larger during ongoing development. We also now know that there will be a day one patch -something Square Enix was previously avoiding- pushing the storage requirements up even further if that’s not accounted for in the pre-load.

This info, courtesy of PlayStation Game Size on Twitter, could actually be a bit more reassuring than many of us excepted. With so many huge games coming out this year, and Final Fantasy 16 looking grander than most, many of us had assumed the game would surpass the 100GB mark. And while it still could after some updates or potential DLC, it looks like we’re safe for now.
This also puts it below the cap for releasing on a single disc, something that Square Enix is taking advantage of. Unlike the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Final Fantasy 16 will have just one disc in the box.
Producer Naoki Yoshida shared the news of Final Fantasy 16 fitting onto one disc yesterday, revealing that this was only accomplished in the past six months. It would have made Final Fantasy 16 the PS5’s first two-disc release, so it remains to be seen what game gets this honour instead. However, this news could suggest that much of the later stages of development have been spent on optimisation - hopefully meaning that we’ll get a pretty polished product when it launches on June 22 - even if it needs a generous portion of storage space.
If you’re on the fence about buying the game,a demo is available on the PlayStation store now. However, anyone without a PS5 is out of luck, as it’s an exclusive launch on the Sony console. This means it’s not going to launch on PC either, although Square Enix has said we can expect a port further down the line.
