GTA Onlinefinally got its next-gen update back in March 2022, implementing new features like the career builder intro, faster cars, time trials, the GTA+ subscription, and ray-tracing, but over a year later, PC still has yet to receive an update tothe Expanded & Enhanced edition.
As reported byKotaku, this hasn’t gone down too well with PC players. GTA Online (and, by extension, GTA 5) now span three console generations–PS3 and Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox One, and PS5 and Xbox Series. you may transfer your characters from one to the other, but given the huge amount of updates, none are the same. For the first two console generations, PC was kept up to date, but for some reason, that’s changed.

“No E&E for PC as of yet, unfortunate,” Zthemuted said in the GTA Online subreddit, attaching a photo of the initial announcement which mentioned exclusive content not only for “the new consoles”, but PC as well. The top comment on the post simply says that it’s “starting to piss me off”, especially as dataminers have uncovered the E&E files in the client.
Not all the new updates are current-gen exclusive. You can still play the San Andreas Mercenaries missions. But anything associated with current-gen is, like ray-tracing. Many have taken this to mean PC is being viewed as last-gen for whatever reason, despite the promise that E&E would not be a console-exclusive overhaul.
Ray-tracing requires specific cards, like the NVIDIA RTX series, but it’s optional, so it’s not like E&E would lock a huge chunk of players out. System requirements may go up with updated graphics, but PC has more settings that let you customise to fit your build, many of which are more powerful than consoles anyway.
The glaring problem is that PC players can’t transfer their characters if they move systems. If you’re on PS4 and want the E&E version, you’ll be able to transfer your characters if you eventually swap your old hardware out for current-gen. PC players can’t move their characters to consoles as GTA Online isn’t cross-platform, meaning that if they want E&E, they’ll have to start from scratch.
GTA Online’s PC port has been an uphill battle for years now, regardless of whether it’s kept up to date. As highlighted on the PC Gaming subreddit, hackers are running wildand unchecked (unless they give everyone free money) and lobbies are filled with cheaters making people’s lives hell.
One commenter shared a story about how they “left GTA V behind when I couldn’t go two minutes without being yanked to some random part of the map”. I quit for a similar reason after being blown up in my apartment every time I logged in. A lack of current-gen updates and years of hacking problems have culminated in bitter resentment, but at least it’s still getting some updates, eh? I’m looking at you, Red Dead Online.
