Craig Mazin, the showrunner for HBO’sThe Last of Ushas teased that the the team might have already found and cast their Abby for the show’s second season before the SAG-AFTRA strikes took place.
Production on the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us might have halted thanks to theAlliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers' inability to see reason with SAG-AFTRA’s demands, but we’ve still been getting some small updates on the show here and there.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Craig Mazin spoke about the second season of the show and some of the work that’s been done on it so far. Specifically, he mentioned that thePart 2won’t fit into one season and that there could even be up to four or five seasons. Most interestingly, Mazin seemed to suggest they’d already found the actor who will play Abby Anderson.
When asked if they’d found their Abby yet, Mazin said, “Maybe. The strike stopped us in our tracks. Things were in process. Look, Abby was the first role that we wanted to tackle. We’ve got a pretty good track record of making major cast announcements and people going, “Really?” which will probably continue. So people may disagree, but I think we got it right so far.”
Even if the actor playing Abby has seemingly been cast already, it’s worth noting that we almost definitely won’t find out about it for some time now. Mazin seems to be teasing that an announcement isn’t too far off, but considering the show stopped production in solidarity with the SAG-AFTRA strikes (as it should), it’s not likely to be revealed until a deal is finally struck. Get on it, Hollywood.
Whoever the actor for Abby Anderson ends up being in The Last of Us' second season, we better hope that they have the sense to delete their social media before the announcement. Not only were The Last of Us fans incredibly toxic towards Bella Ramsey when it was revealed that they would be playing Ellie in the adaptation, but many of them have a massive amount of hatred towards Abby considering what she does in the game.
To this day, Jocelyn Mettler, the face model for Abby, still gets sent death threats for her involvement in the character, despite not even voicing or playing the character and simply being used as the basis for her looks. Laura Bailey, Abby’s voice actor, has had an awful time of it too over the years, which sadly means it’s almost inevitable for whoever ends up playing Abby in the show. Let’s hope they’re given fair warning by Druckmann and Mazin.
