Additionally, we will look at the file size between these two Legend of Zelda games as well. First, let’s take a look at the surface of Hyrule that’s presented to us in both games.
Surface Area Of Hyrule
Both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom take place on the same surface, so shouldn’t the maps be the same size? While the physical constraints of each map are the same, Tears of the Kingdom packs more into the borders of Hyrule.
In Tears of the Kingdom, we were introduced to wells, which were not in Breath of the Wild. There are58 wells in the game, providing additional terrain to cove when exploring Hyrule.
While Breath of the Wild did have caves, there are hundreds more in Tears of the Kingdom. Some of these caves are small areas with not much to explore, but many caves go on seemingly forever. In total, there are over 400 caves for you to explore, adding a huge amount of content for you to play through.

Tears of the Kingdom also has Side Adventures, which were not present in Breath of the Wild. These involve a bit more effort than normal side quests, but aren’t quite at the level of main objectives.
The Depths & Sky Islands
Sky islands in Tears of the Kingdom may not be crowding the sky, but they still provide even more space for you to romp around in.
The real expansion is in the Depths. This area lies under Hyrule, and is essentially the same size as the surface, with new materials, monsters, and locations. Basically, the Depths multiply the size of Hyrule by two.

File Size
File size isn’t as noticeable as map size or amount of content, but it’s worth taking a quick look at.
Tears of the Kingdom comes in at 16.3 GB, while Breath of the Wild was only 14.4 GB. It’s no wonder Tears of the Kingdom is larger, as there is more content.
Interestingly,the first Zelda game from 1986 was only 128kB. This isn’t even one GB; in fact, 128kB is roughly 0.000128 GB! Although Breath of the Wild may be smaller than Tears of the Kingdom, it still has a hefty file size.
Which Game Is Bigger?
Based on all of this information, Tears of the Kingdom is clearly bigger. There are two additional layers of Hyrule to explore, with the Depths being the size of the full surface map. With more nooks and crannies to explore on the surface, the game is over twice as large as Breath of the Wild in terms of content.
This size difference is noticeable in the file size of the game as well. Overall, Tears of the Kingdom is ambitious in size,providing hundreds of hours' worth of gameplay.
