While many of the bosses inFinal Fantasy 16make a huge impression, some of them are a little more understated. Take the Undertaker, for example - it turns up during your mission to take down Dhalmekia’s Mothercrystal, Drake’s Fang, and appears to be summoned as a test for Clive by a mysterious stranger.

Other than its odd appearance and bombastic attacks, the Undertaker has little relevance to the events at hand. You must still defeat it, though, as it is standing between you and the Mothercrystal’s heart. The guide below will help you through the battle against the Undertaker, as well as two other enemies who are extremely reminiscent.
How To Beat The Undertaker
As you’d expect from a huge brute like the Undertaker, this boss has rather slow yet powerful attacks. Unfortunately, the Undertaker’s attacks aren’t as easy to dodge as other large and slow enemies' thanks to their rather explosive qualities.
The table below details all of the Undertaker’s attacks, along with providing some hints as to how you should react to them.
Description
Spirits Within
The boss emits a huge energy beam from its chest and then sweeps it across the battlefield in a horizontal motion.
The best way to consistently avoid damage from this attack is to dodge right into it, abusing your dodge’s invincibility frames and getting an easy Precision Dodge.
Charging Attack
After crouching and placing its arm in front of it, the Undertaker charges forward at you.
Thanks to how slow this attack is, it’s actually quite easy to dodge the hitbox. This is a prime opportunity to get a full Precision Counter combo in.
Ground Pound
After gathering energy in its hand, the boss punches the ground. This attack has tracking, and the punch will be aimed at you. When the fist hits the ground, it creates a large explosion.
This attack comes out relatively quickly, so you’ll want to dodge through it and rely on invincibility frames to survive.
Roundhouse
The Undertaker turns to face you with a slow and forceful swing of its arm. This is largely a move it’ll use to reorient itself, but it can catch you unawares.
Stay alert when the boss is not facing you, and you should have no trouble reacting to this attack.
Shockwave Jump
The Undertaker leaps high into the air. When it crashes back to the ground, it emits a circular shockwave.
Simply leap over the shockwave and let it pass underneath you to avoid damage easily.
Exhume
The Undertaker slams its fists to the ground, covering the battlefield in blue energy. Small lights will appear across the battlefield, which will explode after a few seconds. The explosive lights will keep appearing for a while after this attack is used.
During this long attack, move away from any shining lights that appear underneath you. Otherwise, this is an easy attack to avoid and a great opportunity to attack the boss without fear of repercussion.
The important moves to look out for in this fight areSpirits Within and Exhume. The former is a great opportunity to damage the Undertaker easily by getting behind it, and the latter will add some significant hazards to the stage. In addition, remember that the best way to avoid the Shockwave Jump is to leap over the expanding shockwave.
The boss will only start usingExhumeafter it has beenStaggeredonce. This makes the fight more dangerous, but not significantly.
If you’ve been practicing usingTitan’s Titanic Block, this is a great fight to use it. The Undertaker’s regular physical attacks are easy to predict, so it will be very easy to reliably pull off Titanic Counters, especially when blocking the Charging Attack.
As long as you’re able to reliably avoid this boss’s strong attacks, you should win a victory without much trouble. Winning gets you the following rewards:

How To Beat The Soultaker
You’ll face the Soultaker as part of the stage that takes place inReverie. For all intents and purposes, though, you can consider this fightalmost identical to the fight against the Undertaker.
This version of the fight does give the boss a newstomping attack, but it’s another easily-dodged melee attack.
Thanks to all the new tools you have withShiva and Bahamut, it should be even easier to take this boss down than the previous one. Shiva’sDiamond Dustis a stellar Stagger-inducer, as Bahamut’sGigaflareis fantastic for melting Staggered enemies. Use these in addition to your regular favorites, and you’ll have no problems.

How To Beat Thanatos
As opposed to the previous fight, Thantos, aNotorious Markthat you can hunt later in the game, might provide some problems. It’s a level 42 hunt and serves as an upgraded version of the Undertaker.
The most notable change to the fight is that it has anupgraded version of the usual Spirits Within ability. It instead usesSpirits Without, which is an extended form of the attack that lets Thanatos maketwo horizontal sweepswith the massive energy beam. You’ll need to stay on your toes and be wary that the attack is longer than the one you’re used to.
The strategy of gettingbehind the enemy when this attackstarts up will still work and is as foolproof as ever.
Thanatos will also useDestrudo, which is simplyanother name for Exhumeand is an identical attack. In addition, it will useShockwave Jump many times in succession, often right after using Destrudo, making it more difficult to avoid damage if you don’t keep an eye on impending explosions and the shockwaves.
