At the climax ofThe Witcher 3’sBlood and Wine expansion, you’ve chosen to free Syanna and bring her to Dettlaff. The enraged higher vampire promptly ran her through with his claws and killed her. Suffice it to say, the duchess was not the least bit pleased with the outcome and has thrown you into jail where you will have to wait for your trial.

Geralt, dressed in prisoner’s clothes, talks to a fellow prisoner in a castle.

This somber conclusion is covered in the quest Burlap is the New Stripe. In it, you have to play through Geralt’s time in prison, dealing with shady inmates and cruel guards as he awaits his judgment.

A Jailed Witcher

After Syanna’s demise and settling matters with Dettlaff, Geralt has been imprisoned by the duchess and is awaiting trial. He’s made a friend in the prison in the form of Handsome Jacques, a particularly well-connected criminal, determined to spend his days incarcerated.

He’ll tell Geralt tofollow him to the laundry roomwhere they are to work. It’s in thebuilding opposite,through the door, and down the stairs.

You can use Geralt’s Witcher Senses on the wall behind Jacques tofind a loose brickhiding a note that begins the questThe Perks of Being a Jailbird.

You’ll need to gather thedirty laundryandsoapto start working. The former is in theeast of the room,stored in a pair of baskets. The latter isby the stairsthat you descended when entering the room.

Once you have both in hand,go to the laundry tub.Geralt will start the arduous task of doing the laundry. Before he can complete his task, afamiliar trio enters the roomas the guards leave.

These are the men that hadthreatened the bootblackat the start of Geralt’s search in the questWhere Children Toil, Toys Waste Away.

Geralt, freshly released from prison, sits in Beauclair while talking to a bootblack.

If youdo not have Delusion at level two,you will beunable to de-escalate the situation with Axiiand will have to fight the men. They’ll challenge Geralt to a rematch, laundry pole to washboard. While the weapons are a far cry from Geralt’s swords, the gameplay is the same, essentially being athree-on-one sword fight without potions or signs.

Once again, the guards return to punish the participants, landingall of them in solitary.

Getting Out Of Prison

Sometime later, Geralt is taken from his cell by a guard. You will have tofollow the manas he forces Geralt towatch an executionin the courtyard. Once the gristly display is over, he brings Geralt to the tower where Damien de la Tour is waiting for Geralt.

He’s far from pleased with Geralt’s performance and makes his displeasure clear. Regardless, he tells Geralt that he owes his freedom to an old friend,Dandelion, who had come to Toussaint to ensure that Geralt goes free.

Either way, you cancatch up with Dandelionandwalk free.

Following Up On The Final Lead

Regis is waiting for Geralt outside. He’s been troubled by thefinal victim’s identity.While, neither Syanna nor Dettlaff is able to continue the murder spree, it is still the source of some curiosity.

This step isoptional, and not required to complete the quest.That said, provides some closure to this story.

You can eithertravel with Regisormeet him at the bootblackwhere Geralt will question the boy about the final letter. Once again, Regis proves adept at manipulating children by having him spill thatthe letters were delivered by homeless men.

The investigation brings Geralt toa homeless shelter,where a pair of thugs are trying to force the owner toleave the area.You will have to fight the pair, though victory is not required. Grateful for your assistance, heconvinces the men to cooperate with Geralt.

With their help, Geralt gets the final letter.The duchess herself is the victim.you may choose ifGeralt will present the evidence to the duchessor if he will let her grieve in peace.

Finishing Burlap Is The New Stripe

After meeting the duchess or skipping the encounter entirely, Geralt and Regis catch up over a drink in the cemetery. There aretwo variations of this segment,based on Dettlaff’s survival.

Dettlaff Lives

Geralt and Regis share an uneventful drink, reflecting on their journeys.

Dettlaff Was Killed

Geralt and Regis have their relaxation interrupted by Bruxae.
