Hard to believe thePS5has been in our lives for so long already. Well, maybe not physically in a lot of our lives considering how difficult the consoles were to come by the first couple of years. Those of you who are lucky enough to own one (and I’m assuming that’s all of you otherwise why would you be reading this?) will know they’re pretty darn big. That’s largely down to the massive fan inside that keeps the console cool. Well, as cool as possible.

If you have owned aPS4and a PS5, you’ll know how loud the former’s fan was and that its successor needed an upgrade. The only problem is that big old fans tend to gather dust. I’m one of the many who has fallen foul of that gathered dust causing my PS5 to cut out, only turning back on when the power cord has been disconnected and then plugged back in. The good news is if you have suffered that problem, cleaning the console seems to fix it. It’s also worth taking your PS5 apart to give it a clean every three to six months, and this is how to do it.

Removing Your PS5 Plates

Unlike every otherPlayStationto have come before it, the PS5’s outer shell can be removed with relative ease. Not only does that let you replace your boring white cover with a snazzy new one, but it also means the console’s interior is easily accessible. I wouldn’t recommend trying to remove the plates before you read the steps below, though. While it’s easy to do when you know how, trying to force the issue can result in permanent damage to your console.

You’ll want to start withthe faceplates. That’s the one with the PS logo on it. ensure the console is turned off (I really shouldn’t need to say that) and all of the cables have been removed before you begin. Place the console down flat, on a cloth or a soft surface if you can, with the disc tray (or where the disc tray would be if you have the digital edition) facing away from you.

Grab the bottom left corner of the top cover and lift it up and to the right, exerting a little force, so the plate should (hopefully) slide right off.

You’ll then need to do something similar with the bottom cover. Carefully flip your PS5 over so the disc tray and power button are now facing you. This time, grab the top left corner of the plate and again, lift it up and to the right, at which point the plate should then slide off.

Cleaning Your PS5

Cleaning the vents on your PS5 might seem a bit daunting, but with the right approach, it’s totally doable—and totally worth it. Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty of how to get those vents spotless.

Cleaning Other Components

Your PS5 isn’t the only thing that needs some TLC—let’s not forget aboutthose essential accessoriesthat get just as much action.

DualSense Controller

Start with yourDualSense controller. Grab that trusty microfiber cloth and give it a good wipe down. Focus on the areas around the buttons, sticks, and triggers, where grime tends to build up. For stubborn spots, you can use a slightly damp cloth (with water only!) or a cleaning brush to gently scrub away dirt.

Charging Stations

If you’re using a charging station for your controllers, it’s worth giving that a quick clean too. Dust can accumulate around the charging ports, so use a brush or compressed air to keep them clear. A clean station means better charging efficiency and longer battery life for your controllers.

Headsets

Yourgaming headsetalso deserves some attention. Wipe down the exterior with a microfiber cloth, and if the ear pads are removable, consider giving them a wash (follow the manufacturer’s instructions). Dust off the microphone, and you’re good to go.

Cables and Ports

Don’t forget the cables! Dust and grime can collect where your cables connect to the console. Use a dry cloth to clean the cables themselves, and a brush to gently clean around the ports on your PS5.

When it comes to cleaning your PS5, you don’t need to raid the hardware store. A few essential items will do the trick and keep your console in top shape.

Microfiber Cloth

These are a must-have. They’re soft, gentle, and perfect for wiping down your PS5 without scratching it. you’re able to find them pretty much anywhere—online, at electronics stores, or even in the cleaning aisle of your local supermarket. Just steer clear of paper towels or rough cloth that could damage the surface.

Compressed Air

A can of compressed air is like magic for those hard-to-reach places. It’s great for blowing dust out of the vents and other nooks and crannies. Just remember to use it with care—short bursts from a safe distance are all you need. Too close, and you risk moisture getting into your PS5, which is a big no-no.

Cleaning Brushes

A small, soft-bristled brush can be your best friend when cleaning around the buttons, ports, and other delicate areas of your console. You can pick one up at an electronics store, or even repurpose a clean, unused makeup brush. Just verify it’s gentle and won’t shed bristles.

Harsh chemicals are a definite no-go. Things like alcohol-based cleaners, glass cleaners, or anything abrasive can damage your PS5’s finish and even harm its internal components. Stick to the basics, and your console will stay in pristine condition.

Replacing Your PS5 Plates

Once your PS5 is dirt and dust free, you can put the plates back on. This part should be pretty easy. Start with the top plate and place the console in the same way you did to remove it. On its side, disc tray facing away from you.

Slide the plate from right to left until you hear a click. That’s how you know the plate has been reattached. Flip the console so the disc tray is facing you and do the same with the bottom cover, againsliding it from right to left until you hear a clickso you know it’s secure.

This method works with both the PS5 Disc and Digital versions. Just make sure you remember to wipe down the disc entry area of the former.

Preventative Maintenance Tips

Alright, let’s talk about keeping your PS5 as clean as the day you unboxed it. We all know dust is the enemy, but with a few simple tricks, you can minimize the buildup and keep your console running smoothly.

Location, Location, Location

First off, where you place your PS5 is crucial. Make sure it’s in a well-ventilated area where air can flow freely. Avoid shoving it into tight spaces or up against a wall where it can’t breathe. Trust me, your PS5 will thank you.

Say No to Carpets

If your PS5 is sitting on a carpeted surface, it’s time to reconsider. Carpets are dust magnets, and all that fuzz can easily find its way into your console. Instead, place your PS5 on a hard, flat surface. A small stand or a piece of wood works wonders.

Dust Covers Are Your Friend

When you’re not gaming (I know, it’s hard to imagine), consider covering your PS5 with a dust cover. It’s a simple step that can save you a lot of cleaning time later on. Just make sure it’s a breathable cover, so your console doesn’t overheat.

Regular Dusting

Make it a habit to dust around your PS5 regularly. Use a microfiber cloth to gently wipe down the area around your console to prevent dust from sneaking in. A little preventative care goes a long way!

FAQ

Can You Clean Your PS5 Without Taking It Apart?

you’re able to give the vents and the shell of your PS5 a quick clean without removing the plates, but if you want to thoroughly clean the console and get all of the dust out of its fan, you will need to remove its cover.

How Do I Clean My PS5 Without Scratching It?

The best way to avoid scratching your PS5 when cleaning it is to use a microfiber cloth to remove any dirt, dust, marks, and smudges. If you don’t have one, or you’d prefer not to use a cloth, a can of compressed air can be used with caution to remove most of the dust, especially any trapped in the console’s vents.

Is It Safe To Clean My PS5 With A Vacuum Cleaner?

While the consensus appears to be that the use of a low-power vacuum cleaner to tidy up your PS5 is okay, I personally wouldn’t recommend it. Determining what qualifies as low-power is very much up to the user, and it’s far safer to just stick to cleaning it by hand.
