Yuma Kokohead awakens to a very strange new life at the beginning ofMaster Detective Archives: Rain Code. It seems he’s signed a pact with a Death God (!) and he’s now a Master Detective. But Yuma has no memories of any of this, nor his alleged life as a crime-solver. As far as he knows, he’s just a detective trainee at best.

That’s OK. It puts us on an even level with poor Yuma. We’re starting from scratch, and that translates to Detective Rank as well. But whatisDetective Rank? What does it do? Read on!

What Are Detective Points?

Within minutes of starting Rain Code, newly-introduced protagonist Yuma Kokohead will begin acquiring Detective Points. The level-up gauge will pop up at thetop-right portion of the screen, and eventually you will gather enough of them to advance in rank. This will happen a whole bunch of times throughout your journey.

But what the heck are they? Simply put,Detective Rank measures Yuma’s professional skill, andDetective Points are required in order for him to advance in Detective Rank. There are all sorts of ways to acquire Detective Points. Plenty of them are mandatory, but plenty more are purely optional, and will only be received by completing certain objectives.

How Do You Accumulate Detective Points?

The biggest stockpiles of Detective Points you’ll receive at any given time throughout Rain Code are earnedat the end of each chapter. These payouts will number in the dozens and hundreds. You’re bound to Rank Up, usually by multiple levels. The number earned willcorrespond to how well you performed throughout the chapter.

But there are other ways, though each individual payout will be slimmer. Still, they add up fast.Completing requests, AKA Rain Code side quests, will net some decent DP. These are limited-time opportunities that close up after every chapter. They won’t be available in Chapter Zero.

Many of theinteractive spotsthroughout the game will also net a bit of DP. Be thorough during investigations, and if you see something Yuma can look at in Kanai Ward, treat it similarly. Chatting with NPCs can sometimes net DP, though it’s highly situational.Responding correctly in conversations, that’ll get you a good ten to twenty, andfinding collectibleshelps as well.

What Are Detective Points Good For?

The primary use of Detective Points is tospend them earning valuable skillsat the start of Mystery Labyrinths. These skills will aid you in making Rain Code’s dungeons a little easier. You might raise Yuma’s vitality, or reduce the number ofSolution Keysto ponder over during Reasoning Death Matches and other events.

In fact, there are several different sorts of skills. We haven’t found many of them to feel well and truly powerful, per se, but their usage adds up. TheBrain Cap levelthat rises with Detective Rank is thenumber of ability points that Yuma has for skill allotment; if something costs five, and Yuma has 17, for example, he has 12 more points for equipping further skills.
