Curiosity Vendors return inDiablo 4, requiring players to earn a new currency type to purchase unidentified items. Murmuring Obols take the role of Diablo 3’s Blood Shards, acting as a currency type used for purchasing items of random rarities. If you’re willing to try your luck, this can be a solid way of earning Legendary Aspects.

Obols can also be used to purchase Whispering Keys, a core item to opening some of Diablo 4’s locked chests. This guide will cover what Murmuring Obols are, how you can earn them, and we’ll give some tips on farming strategies and what you should purchase with your hard-earned Obols.

What Are Murmuring Obols?

Murmuring Obols are a type of currency used to purchase items from the Curiosity Vendor,a character found in every hub town that sells unidentified items. Gear purchased from this vendor is identified when purchased, unveiling the item as a Common, Uncommon, Rare, or Legendary piece of gear. Curiosity Vendors are also yourmain source of Whispering Keys.

In essence,Murmuring Obols are effectively Diablo 3 Blood Shards with a new name.Consider farming this material when you want to try your luck at obtaining some easy Legendary gear. There’s also a cap on how many Obols you may carry at once, something you can increase by finding Altars of Lilith and increasing your Renown with each region of Sanctuary.

How To Get Murmuring Obols

Murmuring Obols drop fromworld events, dungeon events, and certain side quest reward caches.Your main source of Obols in Diablo 4 will come from open world events that occur throughout Sanctuary. For clarity, we are referring to random events here, notworld bosses like Ashava.

Completing an event with mastery—completing its main and side objectives—will award 35 Obols to your character. Side quest caches will sometimes award a small bundle of Obols as well, so keep your eyes peeled for any side quests marked on your map.Dungeons and Cellars also have a fairly high chance of spawning events of their own, awarding Obols when completed.

Increasing Your Obol Storage

By default, you may only carry 500 Obols at a time.Any additional Obols obtained will be wasted, so it’s important you either spend your Obols or increase your carrying capacity. You can increase your Obol storage byreaching Rank 4 Renown with each region and by collecting Altars of Lilith.R4 Renown increases your Renown cap by +80, and Altars of Lilith can upgrade your capacity by +20.

What To Spend Obols On

Obols can be spent at Curiosity Vendors, located in every major hub town in Sanctuary. They’ll be labeled as the “Purveyor of Curiosities” on your map.Curiosity Vendors sell unidentified items and Whispering Keys. You can find their exact prices below:

75 Obols

In terms of what you should buy,we generally recommend buying Whispering Keys, Gloves, and Rings.Whispering Keys can be used to open locked chestsin the open world that tend to drop good items. As for items, gloves can roll just about every offensive affix in the game. If your build requires a certain skill affix, there’s a good chance you’ll find it on gloves.

Rings are also worth considering for most builds. Despite the somewhat higher cost of 60 Obols, rings are the only slot type that can roll Legendary Resource Aspects. For example, Sorcerers can only get the “Cooldowns restore Mana” and “CC effects restore Mana” Legendary affixes from rings. Rings can also roll good offensive affixes like critical chance and conditional damage buffs, so they’re usually worth chancing.

Efficient Obol Farming Strategies

Our listed strategy is tailored toward the early/mid-game of Diablo 4. We’ll update this section when more efficient strategies are discovered.

For those looking to farm a ton of Obols in a short timeframe, we highly recommendfarming events north of Menestad, a town in Fractured Peaks. Here is the strategy:

Diablo 4 Obol Farming Strategy Location

In essence, we’re going to complete the event and immediately return to Kyovoshad. We then teleport to Menestad to reset our instance, giving you a high chance of finding another event in the same location. If you do not teleport to Kyovashad every run, you’ll keep loading into the same instance.

Each event gives 35 Obols if you complete the side objective. A good build can clear an event in roughly two minutes if it’s short, three if it’s a longer one. With some practice, you’re able to easily earn 500 Obols per hour.
