After experiencing most ofThe Witcher 3,the young knight Guillaume may seem almost comical in his naïveté. He exists in a setting that thrives on moral ambiguity and cynicism while acting like a noble knight who would be a better fit anywhere else.

After his introduction during your first few steps into Toussaint, Guillaume takes center stage in his own side quest, The Warble Of A Smitten Knight. While, like Geralt’s usual work, the adventure involves monsters, curses, and intrigue, it’s closer to a fairytale than a witcher contract. Not that the happy ending is any easier to find.

Entering The Lists

Afterdefeating the shaelmaarinThe Beast of Toussaint, the second quest in the Blood and Wine expansion, you can start The Warble of a Smitten Knight. Having been thoroughly battered by the monster, Guillaume is in no state tocompete in the tourney.Unfortunately, simply leaving is not an option for him. He hasbecome infatuated with Vivienne, the tourney’s patron, and an infamously distant woman.

You willnot be able to complete this questif you finishCapture the Castle, from the expansion’s main questline.

Geralt appraises his options for a tourney, with two differently adorned sets of knight’s armor.

The young knight believes that she has been thevictim of a curseand is determined to help lift it.Winning the tourney will guarantee an audiencewith Vivienne and make it possible for him to help.

With his plan flattened by the shaelmaar, he asksGeralt to fight on his behalfand touse his skills to lift the curse.Intrigued by Guillaume’s description, Geralt will agree toparticipate in the tourneyandtry to cure Vivienne.

Guillaume will offer tohelp Geralt train for the tourney. While this is a good chance to get an idea of what the tourney entails, both the archery and fencing practiceare exactly what you would expect. The racing practice,on the other hand, should be completed. It’s far different from your usual races.

Which Vow To Take

When Geralt is ready to compete, Guillaume will send him toregister for the competition. The scribe in charge of the process hasidentified two identities for Geralt to assumefor the competition, Geralt of Rivia and Ravix of Fourhorn.

Neither choice will affect the outcome of the quest. That said, any prizes that you win will beaddressed to your chosen identity, and you will draw the ire of different knights.

Geralt aims his crossbow in the foreground while his competitor in the background nocks an arrow.

Once you have made your decision, you will be asked toswear your vows on one of three choices. While swearing on the Duchess' garter may be the most amusing, this decision will not have any lasting consequences.

The scribe will let Geralt take acommemorative shield and a suit of armor, letting you head out and compete.

Geralt and Guillaume walk through a tourney as they discuss their next move.

You do not have to wear the armorand can don your preferred equipment immediately after leaving the tent.

How To Win The Archery Contest

The first contest is archery, where Geralt competes against another tohit the most targets.Head over to the shooting range to start. There, you will findPalmerin, who warns Geralt that the sun will be in his eyes during the contest. While Geralt will not be affected by it, Palmerin offers toswap places with Geraltif he wins a round of Gwent.

Regardless of your victory or participation, the archery contest will begin immediately after. To win,hit all the red targetsbefore your opponentshoots the blue targets. You’ll have to shoot fast, butit won’t be too difficult to win.

Geralt takes aim at a red target as he rides through Toussaint’s countryside.

Coming out on top will get youa crossbow decorated with your chosen heraldryand a brief interaction with Vivienne.

Raiding Vivienne’s Tent

With the first contest completed, Guillaume will have Geraltinvade Vivienne’s tentto find clues about her condition. While one of the sleazier things you do in the game, it is a valuable chance to gain an understanding of her condition.

You willonly have a short time inside her tentto discover what you can. Ultimately, youwill not be able to discover everythingunder normal conditions.

Geralt holds a drink as he talks to a knight in The Witcher 3.

The easiest clues to get are thescratch marks on the cupboard, visible from the entrance, and thebird featheron the desk.

The investigation comes to a close when Guillaume sounds the alarm. One of Vivienne’s handmaidens returns to the tent, spotting both men.You will have to endure her admonishments before you may proceed to the next contest.

How To Win The Race

The second part of the tourney isa time trial through Toussaint.Unlike other races, Geralt is thesole rider on the track. He will have toride the length of the coursewhilestriking dummies and shooting targetsalong the way.

It’s significantly more challenging than most races. Not only will you have topay close attention to the route, but you will also have tolook out for and hitthe targets along the way. Timewill slow when you have a weapon out, making it easier to line up your hits.

A blonde woman mutated into a bird-like creature crouches on a tree in front of Geralt.

Geralt can quickly change which side he swings his sword onduring the race. You canapproach the dummieswithout needing to worry about which side the sword is on.

The trial requires you tohit most of the targetsto make it to the finish line. While it may seem counter-intuitive,slowing down to hit targetsis safer thansurging ahead and risking not hitting the targets at all.

Five men in armor stand ready to fight in an arena in Toussaint.

You can take some solace in the knowledge thatthe targets alternate between dummies on the leftfollowed bycrossbow targets on the rightearly in the course, though this changes roughly halfway through.

So long as youreach the end,Geralt willwin the race.

If victorious, you will receiveone of the best saddles in the game.

Discovering The Truth

After the race is complete, the competitors gather for a feast. While Geralt and Guillaume are content to enjoy a drink after the day’s contests,a knight will challenge Geralt to a duel.Their particular grievance is determined by Geralt’s assumed identity and will lead to different confrontations.

Geralt of Rivia

Prince Anséis, of Lyria and (more importantly) Rivia, believes that Geralt had deserted his mother’s army and demands satisfaction in a duel. His challenge will befought on horsebackand relies on your ability to succeed inmounted combat.

Ravix of Fourhorn

Arthur Tailles had come to Toussaint’s tourney to spread the good name of the Order of the Flaming Rose. With his order’s history closely intertwined and in conflict with Geralt’s, he takes offense at Geralt’s false identity andchallenges Geralt to a fistfight against himself and two allies.

After dealing with either knight, Geralt will return to his seat whenVivienne gives a speech to the competitors. Not wanting to waste the opportunity, Geralt willtail her back to her tent, where she appears to disappear.

UseGeralt’s Witcher Sensesto spot a bird on a railing. You will have tofollow it through a forest, fighting offseveral panthers and a wightalong the way.

You will eventually reach a clearing whereVivienne reveals the truth, that she had been cursed as a child and exists as a half-bird, half-human being. While she is expecting Geralt to kill her, he explains that he aims to do the opposite and cure her instead.

Geralt provides her with two options, eithertransfer the curse to an eggand risk having a significantly reduced lifespan ortransfer the curse to another person, passing on a reduced risk to the volunteer. Vivienneopts for the former.

Her choice doesn’t mean that her fate is set in stone. When you return to the tent,Guillaume will press Geralt for answers, wanting to know what afflicts Vivienne. While she has asked for Geralt’s silence, the witcher has been contracted by the knight and his enthusiasm makes the latter option more palatable.

This is acrucial decision that will affect the end of the quest. It’s not one to be made lightly.

You will also have to decide if you wish tocomplete the tourneynow that you have completed your investigation.

Vivienne’s condition will not worsen over the last contest and some unique items are on the line. You might as well win, since you’ve come this far.

How To Win The Fight

If you choose tocomplete the tourney, the last challenge is afive-on-five team deathmatch. You will need to bothsurvive to the endanddefeat the most opponentsto be crowned victorious. While this sounds difficult, it’s surprisingly easy considering thatyour team will feed the enemy and die in short order.

Your opponents consist ofthree knights with one-handed swords, one knight witha spear, and anotherwith a two-handed axe. They will peel off tofight your alliesat the start of the match, giving you some breathing room.

Try todown both the spear-using knight and the axe-using knightfirst. Their weapons make them especially dangerous considering that Geraltcannot block them. The remaining knights can be defeated in short order.

You will quickly notice that youcannot use signs, bombs, or open your inventory. This limits you towhichever potions are in your quick access, any pre-applied oils, and your perks. While infuriating, it’s what Toussaint’s soft knights consider “honorable” and “fair”.

You canload a prior savetoapply blade oilsand ensure that theright potions are prepared.Remove anything thatimproves your signs.

With some patience and skill, you should be able todefeat the enemy knights.

Fighting The Former Champion

If you havewon all three contests, the final challenge will begin. Geralt will have to fight and defeatGregoire de Gorgon, the soon-to-be former champion. He is a massive adversary, wielding a two-handed sword that inflicts immense damage andcannot be blocked.

Yourhealth and potions will be refreshed, letting you take this fight without dealing with any injuries from the previous one. The same limitations to your offensive options still apply, however.

Your best bet will be to treat your opponentlike a monster.Forget aboutparrying and blockingand focus entirely onavoiding his slow swingsandtaking what opportunities to strike you can.

He isdifficult to stunandhas a surprisingly long range.A good rhythm would be toland a single Strong Attackand dodge away immediately after to avoid a counterattack.

Once defeated, Geralt will be crowned the champion, earning aunique sword and the Champion’s Laurels.

Getting The Best Ending

With the tourney complete, with your participation or without it, Vivienne can finally deal with her curse. A cutscene will play where Geraltgoes to her tentto proceed. There aretwo outcomes to this quest.

Use The Oriole Egg

Geralt will transfer the curseto an oriole egg. While it is successful,Vivienne will perish after seven years,as Geralt predicts.

This will happen if youdo not tell Guillaumeabout the curse.

Transfer The Curse To Guillaume

The knight is eager to prove his love andvolunteers to accept her curse. It will manifest in a weaker form in the knight and free Vivienne entirely.

This is only possible if youtell Guillaume about her curseafter returning from the pond.

If you define the “best ending” as theone with the fewest deaths, the best ending would betransferring the curse to Guillaume. He seems to sufferfew, if any side effectswhile Vivienne is allowed to live a full life. This comes at the cost ofbetraying her trust, which you will have to weigh up against her life.

While she will be free afterusing the Oriole Egg,Vivienne willdie after seven years. While left ambiguous in the quest, you can find her corpse after waiting seven years in-game,as discovered by xLetalis, one of the game’s most dedicated players.
