Utilize Your Ability Score Boosts

As with every species, Kalasthars get adjustments to their ability scores to help them in various scenarios. They get atwo-score increase in their Wisdom and one in their Charisma. The increase in Wisdom will raise your Wisdom Modifier by one, while your Charisma can potentially increase, depending on your stats and rolls.

You could use these stat boosts toget closer to a 20 in both statsor cover up your weakness if you plan to go with a different build. Some people prefer all-around characters. If you go with an all-rounder, ensure you still get some use from your Wisdom or Charisma so they won’t go to waste.

For example, a Monk primarily uses Dexterity, but Wisdom has its uses. Since yourWisdom and Dexterity Modifiers affect your Unarmored Defense, they’ll help you survive encounters. You can select proficiencies related to your Wisdom, such as Insight and Perception.

Even though you won’t use Charisma often as a Monk, the Wisdom boost may justify the species and class combination.

With those scores in mind, you’ll want to see which classes work best with those boosts. Some classes will use your Wisdom and Charisma often, while others won’t use them at all, so weigh out your options. To maximize your species' strengths, you shouldchoose Cleric, Paladin, or Warlock.

Cleric

A Cleric casts spells using Wisdom. Charisma also helps them with saves, making the class ideal for a Kalashtar. You can also use the various domains to customize your character further, such as theLife Domain to provide supportor theWar Domain to deal more damage.

Your Wisdom will also help you with your Turn Undead ability. If you find yourself in an undead-heavy campaign, a Kalashtar Cleric will work wonders for you. That, alongside the higher DC on your spells, means you’ll successfully cast them more often and tackle various challenges.

Paladin

If you want a beefier class, you can choose a Paladin. Paladins use their Charisma for spellcasting, making the slight boost from a Kalasthar excellent. They also haveWisdom and Charisma saves, so you’ll want to maximize your odds by using this species.

Since you’ll mostly be casting spells, youwon’t have to worry about your Strength or AC. While you can build your Dexterity and use ranged attacks if you run low on spell slots, always prioritize your Charisma to deal more damage and avoid failed casts.

Go with the Warlock if youwant to deal damage, and stand backwhile you let the tanks fight.

You don’t need to use these classes with a Kalashtar.Any class can work on any species, but these simply use the stat boosts the most, making them ideal for maximizing your effectiveness.

Since you’ll have a high Wisdom Modifier, you cantake some risks regarding Wisdom saves and checks. If you create a plan that involves an animal, you’ll have higher odds of succeeding since your Animal Handling is based on your Wisdom Modifier.

For instance, if you get confronted by a guard who questions you, talk with your party members and coordinate a plan. Sure, you can talk with your party out of character, but you shoulduse the Mind Link to avoid metagaming.

You can also use the Mind Link to secretly communicate and convince NPCs. Talk with your DM about the trait to determine what you can do, so you’ll work with the party and overcome challenges.

Kalashtars have resistances that can make a difference. If you forget to apply or use them, you’ll lose the benefits, especially since youshouldn’t expect the DM to track all your traits.

The Severed Dreams trait may seem insignificant initially, but it has benefits if people overlook them. Since you don’t dream, an effect won’t impact you if it involves you dreaming. You also get your Mental Discipline and Dual Mind, allowing you totake less damage and succeed more often.

Make a note of these abilities ahead of time, so you’ll regularly see and use them. Wisdom saves come up more often than you may expect, so take advantage of them and help your character succeed.
