Blacksmiths serve as one of many different upgrade vendors you’re able to use to enhance your items. Alternatively, you can bring the Blacksmith items you aren’t using to dismantle them for crafting materials, resources you’ll need to make the strongest items in the endgame. This guide will cover all of the Blacksmith’s services in Diablo 4, covering how to salvage items, upgrade your gear, and how to repair broken items.

Every major town in Sanctuary has a Blacksmith vendor you can visit. Blacksmiths offer the following services:

Salvaging Items

Salvaging items is the most important service that a Blacksmith provides.A Blacksmith can destroy any items you currently aren’t using, converting them into crafting components. The rarer the item, the rarer the crafting materials you’ll receive. Blacksmiths can destroy all rarity types, including Legendary gear.

What Does That Pickaxe Icon Mean?

If you see a salvageable item with a pickaxe icon, that means the item has a skin you currently don’t own in your wardrobe. Dismantle the skin to unlock the item skin as a transmog skin in the wardrobe menu.

If it wasn’t obvious, salvaging an item will permanently delete it, so be sure you’re willing to part ways with that item before you destroy it. The good news is that salvaging items gives you valuable crafting materials, as shown in the table below:

Repairing Gear

Dying in Diablo 4 will cause your items to lose durability. If you die multiple times without repairing your items, they will break and become unusable. You can fix damaged and broken gear by speaking to a Blacksmith in any major town.Repairing your items costs a small Gold fee. The more damaged the item, the greater the fee.

Upgrading Items

Blacksmiths have the ability to upgrade your weapons and armor at the cost of crafting materials and Gold. Upgrading an item this way will slightly increase its Item Power level. This will slightly increase the item’s base Attack Power or Armor rating, and it will slightly improve the item’s affix values.

It’s worth noting that Item Power has breakpoints where affix values become much larger. This means thatupgrading your item might reroll your affix values.Rerolling will only occur if your item hits a new power level breakpoint (for example: going from 390 to 400). If you ever upgrade an item and wonder why a particular affix became much stronger or paradoxically weaker, this is why.
