The EMF boosters are the key to completing the game’s main objective, but if you stick around in Garland you can also complete Hank’s side quest. Doing so earns an Achievement or Trophy and an extra bit of lore at the end of the game!
This guide contains spoilers.
How To Turn On The EMF Boosters
You can’t go to Garland until after the encounter with Olivia and her friends at the Community Center. The path is blocked with a radio lock that requires theupgraded radioin order to open. Once you’ve reached Garland, you can explore the town; ultimately, Riley and Jacob will realize they need togo through the collapsed minesto reach the transmitter point on the cliff over the church.
There are three boosters scattered throughout the town; you’ll be able to see the cables running to and from each. They don’t do anything until they’re powered on, though. Go to the post office (the building in the bottom-right corner of the town) and enter through the front door. You’ll receive a radio call from Hank, who can be reached on Channel Four from that point forward.
Once you’re done talking to Hank, activate the generatoron the front counter of the post office. you may now interact with the EMF boosters.
How To Set The EMF Boosters
The EMF boosters have an effect on the Time Tear in the center of the town’s bottom level. Changing the boosters' settings changes the year to which the Time Tear leads! The uppermost booster is damaged beyond repair after Olivia stole critical parts from it, so you canonly change the settings on the bottom and middle boosters.
The bottom EMF booster, located immediately to the left of the Time Tear, indicateswhich century you can travel to; the middle one, located on the ledge above, sets the decade. So, for example, if you set the middle booster to 7 and the bottom booster to 9, the Time Tear would lead to 1970.
You can set and reset the EMF boosters as many times as you wish, but there are only a few years that have anything worth seeing.

How To Enter The Mines
The mine tunnel that you need to pass through collapsed in 1892, according to the memorial plaque on the building near the middle booster. This means that if youset the Time Tear to 1890, you’ll be able to enter the mines before the disaster happened. Once you’re inside, you’ll exit the Tear and be able to climb up to the exit above the church.
How To Complete Hank’s Side Quest
As an optional objective, Hank asks Riley and Jacob to take a picture if the EMF boosters show them anything notable. That isn’t much to go on, but if you’ve beencollecting Maggie’s lettersyou may find a hint. One letter, dated when Hank was a baby, mentions his older brother Tom, who died before he was born. The sketch on the letter shows a grave fromsometime in the 1900s.
If youset the Time Tear to visit 1930and go through, you’ll see Tom sitting in front of the general store. Talk to him, and Jacob will take his picture. When you return to the present, radio Hank on Channel Fourto let him know what you’ve found.
Hank will ask you to findphysical evidence of ghostly activity. If you haven’t already done so,return to the cave on Horseshoe Beachwhere Riley encountered the child ghost. Collect the shoe at the back of the cave andplace it in the lockbox on the second floor of the post office. When that’s done, radio Hank again to complete his side quest. At the end of the game, the box of mementos will include a copy of Hank’s book about paranormal activity, with a thank-you note to Riley.
If you pay close attention to the final conversation with Hank and some end-game dialogue, you’ll discover that Hank’s wife Cynthia is Charlie’s older sister!
