Baldur’s Gate 3has limited options for permanent stat increases, and some are a tiny bit more complicated than others. The Mirror of Loss, for example, is a unique method of stat adjustment that requires no small amount of bargaining, forethought, and general cleverness to take advantage of.

Located in the Chamber of Loss, the deepest part of the House of Grief in Baldur’s Gate, you’ll need to have completed Shadowheart’s questline to a certain extent to reach it. If you’re not beholden to your memories and have your hands on a niftyRemove Cursespell, this might just be the thing for you.
What Does The Mirror Of Loss Do?
When the mirror is successfully and correctly activated, the Mirror of Loss can alter your stats bydecreasing one stat by two points and increasing another by the same amount.
Your decreased statsappear as a curse, meaning you canremove the negative stat losswith the spellRemove Curseandgain two points in any stat for free.
If you have read theNecromancy of Thay, you can trade your knowledge from that book and gain two stat points. Deceiving the mirror with a fake memory gives you no stat points.
Every member of your party can activate the mirror andgain its benefits once. Every use after the first time (per character) will only give you a curse and no boon.
You alsocannot increase a stat above 24.
How Do I Activate The Mirror Of Loss?
To activate the Mirror of Loss, you mustpass a series of checks to first identify it.You must pass aReligion (DC20) and Arcana (DC25)to open the mirror for use. Theseneed only be done once.
After the mirror has been activated, you’re able to give it your memories, but you won’t receive any boons. To receive the boon from the mirror, each character must pass their own Religion (DC25) check to pray to the mirror.
You only getone chance to prayto the mirror per character. If your character fails, they will be forever locked from the mirror’s benefits.
If you passed the prayer check, thecharacter that passed can now offer up its memories. You can offerany stat of your choiceso long as it does not have a score of 8.
Each memory isin order of the six stats:
Strength
Offer memories of your strength - times when you triumphed, thanks to your raw power.
Dexterity
Give up memories of your youth, when your heart was carefree and your limbs were nimble.
Constitution
Relinquish memories of fortitude and well-being, when body and mind held fast against all challenges.
Intelligence
Surrender valued knowledge gleaned from books, scrolls, tablets…words that left a mark on your mind - but no more.
Wisdom
Let go of some wisdoms that time has bestowed upon you - old wounds, touch lessons, and fond memories alike.
Charisma
Give away memories of when your charm stood to you - the applause of the swayed, the smiles of the beguiled, the kisses of the seduced.
If you forgot which stat you want to offer, you’re able to use the Character Select on the bottom left and change characters. Then, Examine the character speaking with the mirror to refresh their stats.
Once you’ve offered up a stat of your choice, you’ll be given a random memory. Afterward, you should be given theoption to choose which stat you would like bolstered. They are listed in the same order as the previous choice:
Claim memories of strength from a long-dead general, who marched under the banner of a vanished kingdom.
Help yourself to the memories of a seasoned thief’s most daring exploits.
Seize the memories of a barbarian, whose mind and body were tempered against hardship.
Glean the secrets of a wizard who once stalked the library of Candlekeep.
Turn to the wisdom of a drow. Once of Lolthe, then of Shar.
Warm to the guile of a bard who could charm even a dragon.
There have been several reports of abugged Mirror of Lossonly giving the curse and no reward. This has mostly been fixed in the official first patch, but it still has a chance of happening and did happen to our staff during testing after three successful uses of the mirror.
If you have ensured that a) your character has not received a boon before and b) they have passed their Religion check when praying to the mirror, a confirmed solution to this bug is to exit to your desktop and reload the game.
How To Remove The Mirror’s Curse
When you finished with the mirror, you will see thatyou have a curseattached to you. This is theremoval of two points of your stats.
Use the spellRemove Curseon that character, and yourdiminished stat will return to normal.Your stat boost will not change, giving you a permanent +2 to a stat of your choice! You can now walk out of the House of Grief feeling strong enough to take on a god of murder - or something like that.
