The default Megacities Realm is an archipelago where each player has their own island, but there’s nothing stopping you from creating a Megacities map with your own rules. Try these tips to become a Megacity magnate!
How Are Megacities Different From Regular Cities?
In Megacities, playerscannot settle, annex, or integrate any cities other than their Throne City. You can still place Outposts and extend them with Work Camps, however, which is a great way of snatching up Magical Materials and Ancient Wonders that are just a little too far from home.
Your single city is allowed to claim Provincesup to five additional sectors awayfrom the city center, letting you expand your reach in a wide radius. To do this, of course, you’ll need a large population!
Tips For Building Your Megacity
Food is important in any game, but for Megacities it’s essential.Build Farms for your first few Province Improvements,or Fisheries if you have coast access. The goal is to get your population as high as possible as quickly as possible to annex lots of provinces! In the city center, start byimproving Productionthrough Workshops and Stonemasons so that you can rush Taverns and Bathhouses; that way your Stability won’t suffer from rapid expansion.
You can afford to hold off on taking provinces with Magical Materials or other useful nodes; there’s much less chance that your opponents will get to them first, since they’re also restricted to a single city!
Even if it’s not your primary Affinity, you should take at least one Nature tome or give your Ruler a Nature ability when they level up. Nature has an early Affinity Skill thatincreases the output of Farms by five, which is a huge boost for this particular build. Nature is also very good at growing population in general, making it a very good choice overall for this mode.

Expanding Your Megacity
Once your core provinces are settled and your economy is online, it’s time to start branching out! Chances are you’ll have picked up a vassal or two by this point; try tolet them take the land around their cities, while you push outward away from your shared borders.
Send your Ruler to claim any nearby Ancient Wonders; you can bring them into your borders with a nearby Outpost, but it’s better toannex them to your Megacity if possible.Do this by “snaking” a string of provinces toward the Wonder in question each time your population grows; the sooner you have the Wonder, the sooner you can use its effects!
Megacity Limitations
With only one city, even a big one, you’ll haveless Gold and Mana to spendthan you would in a normal game. This means it will usually be better fieldsmall, elite armiesthat can handle most threats. It’s also important tovassalize as many cities as possiblewhile maximizing their Allegiance, so that you get larger tributes and more favorable trade prices.
It’s very important to note that since your Hero capacity is limited by your number of cities, recruiting any Heroes other than your Ruler will be expensive.Even if you get a “free” hero from an event, you’ll still have to pay the extra cost and upkeep for going over your limit. It’s probably better to recruit a high-tier unit to fill a Hero’s role in your armies.
