Mortal Kombat 1’sfirst ever Kombat Kast took place today, a showcase in which the developers gave us a closer look at some of the fighters that will be included in the main roster and how they play this time around. One of the fighters that got a chunky section of the show dedicated to them was none other than our favorite goofy boy Johnny Cage, who is sporting a bunch of new mechanics that look like they could be seriously overpowered in the right hands.

For starters, Mortal Kombat 1 has given Johnny Cage something called the Hype Meter, a unique feature to Johnny Cage that allows him to charge a meter by doing special moves and taunts. Some of his moves can now be extended to include taunts at the end, or you can simply taunt from a distance. Once it’s filled, Johnny Cage will then be able to cancel his special moves into other special moves, allowing him to use multiple special moves in a row for ridiculous damage.

On top of that, this Hype Meter will also let Johnny Cage to use an EX Move without the cost of a bar, allowing him to use a free EX Move once per combo. The Hype Meter does cooldown fairly quickly, which will then have to be built back up again, but it’s pretty ridiculous stuff that could be terrifying to come up against if you find yourself head to head with an experienced Johnny Cage player.

Away from the Hype Meter, Johnny Cage also has another trick up his sleeve, and it’s all about throw cancels. Instead of simply breaking an opponent’s attempted throw like every other fighter, Johnny Cage can use one bar of his meter to break his opponent’s arm which blocks their ability to throw for a limited time. Obviously, it uses up a bar so it is pretty costly, but the Hype Meter and its free EX Move mechanic is there to make up for it. Stir all these ingredients together, and Johnny Cage is looking like a force to be reckoned with.

Of course, he has some pretty stiff competition to prove himself against, including Smoke and Rain who were both confirmed to be part of Mortal Kombat 1’s main roster at launch. We’s also saw a few other returning characters such as Cyrax, Sektor, and Frost, but these three are only Kameos for the time being. You’ll get to try out these characters, along with Johnny Cage and his ridiculous new toolkit, when Mortal Kombat 1 launches this year on September 19.
