A Kingdom Hearts fan is moddingFinal Fantasy 15’s main city, Insomnia, intoKingdom Hearts 3, and it’s suddenly got me a lot more excited about Shibuya’s potential in Kingdom Hearts 4.
While Twilight Town and Traverse Town have already shown how great small towns can be in Kingdom Hearts, cities don’t really have much of a place in the series' history so far. The biggest example of something like this is Big Hero 6’s San Fransokyo in Kingdom Hearts 3, and even then that mostly felt empty and without much to see or do that justified the world’s size.

This is a little bit worrying consideringhow much importance Kingdom Hearts 4 seems to be placing on Shibuyaas its main world but, as ever, the Kingdom Hearts modding community has come to the rescue. This mod, fitting called the Insomia mod and shared by YouTuber Larxian, aims to bring Final Fantasy 15’s Insomnia into Kingdom Hearts 3, and it looks incredible.
As showcased in the video, the mod brings the whole city of Insomnia from Noctis' adventures into Kingdom Hearts 3, complete with the castle and fancy building with a skylight, also known as Caelum Via, that we mostly saw in the footage from Versus 13. Not only can the city be explored in the day, but there’s also a nighttime mode now, something that Larxian commented that “most people in the modding community expected to not be possible”. Of course, there’s also a ton of Heartless to fight, and even Yozora if you’re brave enough.
This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen this mod in action. Larxian previously shared a video of their progress on the mod towards the start of the year, but it wasn’t very far along and the city was only shown during the daytime. The version of the mod that they’ve shown off this time, though, has nighttime and a bunch of new areas for the player to explore, apparently with no loading screen transitions too, which is impressive considering most worlds in Kingdom Hearts 3 need a loading screen or two.
If, like me, you’re looking at the mod and wanting to get your hands on it, you might have to wait a little bit. Larxian confirmed that the mod is around 85 percent done, but that it depends on what they decide to add to it in the future. The footage shown was also a “test scene” from Unreal Engine, with the final city being made in Blender and imported into the game. Once the map is finished, Larxian wants to figure out how to put the world as a save point on the map, include combat encounters, and add save points to make the world feel more realised.
