You don’t have to be an avid reader of the IDW’sSonic the Hedgehogcomic run to know aboutTangle and Whisper. These two characters created for the comics have been shipped together for years - so much so that we’ve long known that there are shippers among the IDW team itself. However, Whispangle might be even more popular than we thought, with Sonic comics and Frontiers writer Ian Flynn confirming that there are a bunch of fans behind the scenes. Speaking about Sonic shipping over on Twitter, Flynn confirms that “the majority” of creatives working on the comics assume Tangle and Whisper are lesbians - himself included. While stressing that this doesn’t mean that they’re canonically gay, it does show that those who write the stories want them to be, or at least personally believe that they’re queer. It’s not clear why the ship hasn’t been made canon yet, but Flynn says he doesn’t have the power to make it happen, implying it’s all inSega’s hands.Related:Sega Letting The Sonic Mania Team Move On Was A Huge Mistake"Tangle and Whisper aren’t officially lesbian[s]," says Flynn, speaking on Twitter about how Sonic writers feel about shipping. “The majority of the fandom and creatives assume they are, myself included.“However, he then goes on to explain why he doesn’t outright say Tangle and Whisper are gay: “I can’t. [And] I don’t want folks disappointed if something changes down the line.”

While shippers will be excited to hear that so many of the creatives that work on the comics agree that Tangle and Whisper would be great together, Flynn’s wording here suggests that they won’t be made canon anytime soon. Not only does he make it clear it’s not up to him, he also talks about the possibility of “changes” down the line that may disappoint fans. This could refer to a hypothetical scenario in which Sega interferes and pairs them up with male characters instead. Although right now, Sega is said to be against Sonic characters being inanykind of romantic relationship.

In the context of the tweet thread, Flynn was making it clear that he’s fine with any Sonic characters being shipped, even if it contradicts the Tangle and Whisper pairing that he and other creatives are keen on. With any luck though, they’ll get to make it canon one day. I mean, just look at the header image for this article. That’s from the most recent issue.
