Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 is launching on PC on October 24, finally bringing the original three games to Steam for the first time. But there’s a catch. You have to play with a controller.
That’s according to the official Steam page which reads, “Notice: METAL GEAR SOLID - Master Collection Version requires a controller to play. Playing with a keyboard and mouse isn’t supported” (thanks,DSO Gaming).

The Steam page has since been taken down, but you can still see it on Google. However, if you click the link, it will take you to the Steam homepage. It’s unclear why it has been removed, but Konami may have listed it too early.
Interestingly, you can pick up Metal Gear Solid onGOGand it supports mouse and keyboard as well as controller. The old MGS2 port–which is now much harder to find due to licensing issues–also had mouse and keyboard support. Why the bundled collection wouldn’t is a mystery, though it might be that the first two gamesdosupport mouse and keyboard, while the third doesn’t. Based on the description of the Steam page, however, it sounds like all three will require a controller.
The bundle also includes the NES versions of Metal Gear and Snake’s Revenge, and it’s unclear whether these two will also require a controller. Perhaps when the page is back up properly, there’ll be better clarification. Otherwise, we’ll have to wait for Konami to clear the air or for the game to launch, whichever comes first. At any rate, modders will no doubt find a way to implement support, but that’ll mean waiting after launch if you don’t have or want to pick up a controller.
A silver lining is that controller support for the collection does mean it’s likely that we’ll be able to play Metal Gear on the Steam Deck, taking Solid Snake with us on the go. But given the Deck’s battery life, I wouldn’t stray too far. Another option is the Nintendo Switch asKonami confirmed in yesterday’s Direct that Master Collection Vol 1 is coming to the platform. Like PC, it includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
It’s also confirmed to be launching on PlayStation and Xbox if handheld isn’t your thing.
