Molduga are special minibosses that are exclusive to the desert region in the far south-west of Hyrule: Gerudo. These enormous, serpent-like creatures burrow under the sand and swim through the desert, surfacing on occasion for air and food. How Do You Beat Molduga?
Molduga can be tricky to take down if you don’t understand their key mechanic, but that’s what we’re here to explain. The important thing to know about Molduga is that they hone into your location based on sound! When they hear you running around, they’ll burst up through the sand and gobble you up, doing significant damage in the process.
Your task is todistract the Molduga with sound somewhere else. Shoot an arrow or throw an itemaway from you, then wait for the Molduga to attack that spot instead. You can tell when the Molduga thinks it’s found something by the helpful question and exclamation marks that appear over its mound of sand.
While it’s not absolutely necessary, it’s reallyhelpful to find some high ground for this part!Basically, we mean anything where the Molduga can’t get right under you in the sand, like on top of a ruined pillar. This helps ensure that the Molduga won’t be pulled to your location by accident. And, even if it does hear you there, there’s not much it can do to hurt you.
Once the Molduga reaches the arrow or item you threw, it will launch itself into the air! Usually, it would immediately return to the sand, but you can stop that byshooting it in mid-air.Bonus points if youuse a Bomb Flower, which will stun it instantly. Otherwise, you’re probably going to need to take several shots with regular arrows.
Astunned Moldugawill flop on its side, temporarily motionless.Attack with your strongest melee weapon! However, keep an eye out for movement; the Molduga will eventually recover and flop over onto its belly. As soon as it begins to move again, run away!It will swipe at you with its tailfor a lot of damage, otherwise.
Now that you know the basic steps, just repeat until you’ve beaten this boss! We’ve basically described all of its tricks here, so you don’t need to expect the unexpected. Molduga get their intimidating reputation because most people encounter them for the first time and are taken completely by surprise, with no prior knowledge of what attacks a Molduga will use or how to avoid its terrifying jaws. When you know that it’s listening for you and all you really need to do is distract it, the process for beating it becomes rather simple.
What Weapons And Items Should You Bring?
Bringing a strongbowisn’t as important as bringinga lot of arrowsto this fight. Your shots will mostly be to stun the Molduga or distract it, so they don’t need to be shot from the most powerful bow in your arsenal. However, you do want a lot of arrows, because you don’t know how many times you’ll need to repeat the process of distracting it and sniping it from mid-air. It would suck to have to back out of a fight three-quarters of the way in just because you don’t have any arrows left for that final round.
As we noted above,Bomb Flowersattached to your arrows make the sniping section much simpler and save you on arrows to stun the Molduga. These are incredibly valuable, we know, but try to save up a little stash to bring to Gerudo with you.
As far asmelee weaponsgo, we tend toprefer strong one-handed weapons or spearsto the slower two-handed weapons for a Molduga fight; Molduga don’t stay stunned for long, so you’re missing out on damage with each slow swing of a two-handed weapon. Whatever melee weapon you choose, though, the more damage the better! You won’t have to do as many repeats of the distracting-and-sniping process if you’re able to take down more of its health each round.
What Armor Should You Wear?
Armor isn’t just a matter of fashion in Tears of the Kingdom; itcan have a drastic effect on your well-being,as you probably already know!
Molduga appear in Gerudo, as we mentioned. In the desert, it’shot during the day but freezing at night. If you take one on during the day, you’ll need heat-resistant armor, like the Desert Voe Armor set. If you take it on at night, you’ll need cold-resistant armor, like the Snowquill Armor set. In fact, you mightdecide when to fight a Molduga based onwhich of those armor sets you’ve upgradedmore at a Great Fairy. If your heat-resistant armor is giving you better defense, opt for that.
You should alsoconsider purchasingSand Bootsfrom the Secret Gerudo Fashion Club in Gerduo Town. You only need two pieces of the weather-related armor set to get the full benefit, so you’re free to equip a different third piece. The Sand Bootsallow you to run faster in the desert sand,so the benefits should be instantly obvious! This is the stuff that Molduga swim through, and that you’ll need to run around in in order to defeat it.
You might be inclined to weararmor that will give you a sneaking bonus, like the Stealth Armor set, because Molduga are listening for a sound to hone in on your location. However, it’snot super helpfulin the long run. You’ll mostly be distracting the Molduga with items or arrows anyway, so a sneaking bonus becomes moot.
