Mortal Kombat 1is right around the corner, and ahead of its September launch, NetherRealm has shared a first look at its gameplay. This was during the Summer Game Fest where we also found that Kenshi and Goro would be joining the roster, as well as how Kameo fighters will work.
Kameo fighters are nods to the old Mortal Kombat games, with Ed Boon stating that they’ve dug into their back catalogue to bring to life a second roster of fighters. You’ll be able to pick them after choosing your main fighter, and once locked in, you’ll share their moves. In total, there are 16 Kameos, and throughout the reveal, we saw Goro, Striker, Kano, and a few others.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches on September 19, and while it’s a reboot of the series, it’s also a sequel to MK11. We’re in Fire God Liu Kang’s new world ushered in by the last game’s ending, making this both a jumping-on point for new players and a continuation for old fans. Regardless of which camp you fall into, you’re able to, helping to prepare the servers for launch day. While not a beta, you will be able to play in the Klassic Tower arcade mode, 1v1s against AI, and versus online opponents.
Kameos can be summoned via a button in combat, with a cooldown bar to stop you from spamming them mid-fight. They work kind of like assists, jumping into land attacks during battles, but as said earlier, Ed Boon said that you’ll even share their abilities with whoever your main character is.
After the gameplay trailer, we also got a look at the new select screen, which has a more modern minimalist UI with both Kameos and fighters on-screen together. Interestingly, Jax and Kano appear as Kameos.
We also got further insight into what Mileena and Kitana’s relationship will be like in MK1. It was initially believed that, in Fire God Liu Kang’s new universe, they were closer and more sister-like, rather than rivals as they have been throughout the series' history. However new dialogue indicates that they arestillat each other’s throats, with Mileena accusing Kitana of vying for her throne.
However, Scorpion and Sub-Zero are seeing a huge shift in their story. The two are now brothers, and we see the two standing side-by-side several times throughout the trailer. Clearly, things are a little different this time.
