Mortal Kombat 1’s pre-release advertising has mostly gone off without a hitch. With a stress test weekend so popular thatpeople were scalping codes, to surprising yet popular story changes, there’s a lot of hype going into its planned September 19 release date. But that doesn’t mean that fans haven’t spotted some problems.
Over on Twitter, gameplay footage of Mortal Kombat 1 is being thoroughly roasted, with many feeling that it doesn’t shape up to other modern fighting games likeStreet Fighter 6. In particular, many are ripping on MK’s fighter animations, calling them janky, goofy, and worse than what we got inMortal Kombat 11. Overnight, fighting game enthusiasts have gone from criticism to shitposting, strongly suggesting that MK1 could do with some more time in the oven before launching in a couple of months.

For anyone out of the loop, it’s apparently been an ongoing joke in the fighting game community that Mortal Kombat’s fighting animations leave a lot to be desired. Admittedly, I’ve never actually noticed, but I suppose if you’re a pro, you’re going to pay attention to these things.
The most common complaint is that attacks just don’t have much ‘oomph’. As if you’re able to’t really feel the power from them, making Johnny’s combos looks pretty weak. Even if you’re more of a casual fighting game fan, it’s difficult to unsee this once it’s pointed out - there’s definitelysomethingmissing when you compare it to other games in the genre.
Also, no matter what you think of it all, it’s pretty funny. MK1 is now getting compared to everything from that weird Photo Dojo game for Nintendo DSi back in the day, to playing as the Nostalgia Critic in a Streets of Rage knockoff.
Some MK fans argue that the hate is unwarranted since the game is still in development. However, regardless of what you think of the animations, it’s incredibly unlikely that something as fundamental as this could be overhauled in around two months. But other areas of the game, like the rather generous hitboxes fans are noticing, could be fixed. Otherwise, we could be in for some very frustrating fights on launch day.
Mortal Kombat 1 will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC. It’s the first MK to leave the PS4 and Xbox One behind.
