Mortal Kombat 1has just revealed a whole host of returning fighters during its first-ever Kombat Kast. We got to see Smoke, Cyrax, Sektor, Frost, andRain.

Rain and Smoke are part of the main roster, meaning that they’re playable fighters, while Frost, Cyrax, and Sektor areKameos, meaning that they’ll play a support role. Interestingly, previous leaks claimed that Rain was not a part of the main line-up, and so this reveal seemingly disprovesthe assumed roster, which could mean that MK1 has more surprises up its sleeves.

If you don’t know who Rain and Smoke are, they’re two of the original palette swap ninjas (like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Reptile). In the original timeline, Rain was a demi-god Edenian prince who wanted to take over Outworld. Smoke (AKA Tomas Vrbada) was a Lin Kuei assassin who first debuted as a secret unplayable character in the second game where he was a human, before being a playable character in MK3. By that point, he had turned into a cyborg. Both Smoke and Rain also appeared in MK11, the last main game, as DLC characters. Interestingly, much as with MK1, Smoke was a human in the DLC.

During the new trailer, we get to see Smoke alongside Scorpion and Sub-Zero (who are brothers in the new timeline), meaning that he is likely still a Lin Kuei assassin, while Rain is seen fighting alongside Kung Lao.

That still leaves a few of the palette swap ninjas–Ermac, Chameleon, Reptile, and Tremor. Of course, there’s also Noob Saibot, but given that they’re the same character as Sub-Zero, they don’t exactly count.Ermac is rumoured to be DLC, while Reptile was part of the leaked roster, but given that it has gone up in Smoke (wahey), we don’t know if they’ll be in MK1 at launch.

Interestingly, Smoke is also a part of the cyborg trio (with Cyrax and Sektor)–if you’ve played MKX, you’ll remember them appearing as one DLC called ‘Triborg’. Two parts of that third, Cyrax and Sektor, appear in their cyborg forms as Kameos in MK1, but Smoke is still human, but whether that has any significance in the story remains to be seen.

Much of the roster is still a secret, but Ed Boon has been teasing what we can expect for a while now. A few hints point tomore 3D-era characters returning, with the leak mentioning the likes of Nitara, while Boon also shared a photo of MK4’s line-up. With the game out in only a couple of months, we’re bound to find out more soon.
