Ed Boon has revealed thatMortal Kombat 1’s new Kameo fighters system could include guest characters, opening the door to even more non-Mortal Kombatcharacters joining the fight.

Although the timeline reset might seem like Mortal Kombat 1’s biggest feature,it’s actually the new Kameo system, which lets you choose another character from a separate roster to back you up in battle. They might have just seemed like an optional feature during the game’s reveal, but they’re so important that they can’t be turned off and were in factchosen as a replacement for the variants system introduced in Mortal Kombat X.

So far, we’ve only seen a handful of the Kameo fighters that are going to be available to choose from, with a few more leaked alongside information about the first Kombat Pack. Ed Boon has previously teased that these Kameos can be made up of anyone from Mortal Kombat history, not even just the playable characters, but he’s now gone one step further and teased that they could even include guest characters who have nothing to do with the series.

As pointed out by Twitter user BruskPoet,Ed Boon recently spoke to Warner Play Latino during Summer Game Fest Play Days. While speaking to them, Ed Boon revealed that his favourite new feature in the game is the Kameos system and said he was looking forward to seeing what players do with it. When asked if we can expect new characters as well as classic ones for Kameos, Boon revealed we can expect “anything” and that the team is even considering making some Kameos guest characters.

Boon said, “you may expect anything, I think. We plan on releasing more Kameo characters after the game is launched, just like we’re going to do regular fighters. We’re very excited to explore even guest characters as Kameos, we think that’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Since Kameo fighters don’t have to have a full moveset, this opens the door to many more characters getting into Mortal Kombat, as they don’t have to be quite as developed and only really need a few moves and a fatality. One suggestion that BruskPoet made while sharing the news is Chucky, who would fit in well as a Kameo fighter considering his smaller size.

So far, no guest characters have been officially revealed for Mortal Kombat 1, although Amazon Brazil did possibly leak some of them when it revealed the contents of the first Kombat Pack.According to that leak, the first guest fighters we’ll see are Invincible’s Omni-Man, DC’s Peacemaker, and Homelander from The Boys.
