Mortal Kombat 1’s most recent gameplay trailer might have just debunked the roster leak that’s been going around over the last month, as it’s been confirmed that Rain is going to be a playable character.
Despite having only just been announced a couple of months ago, Mortal Kombat 1 has seemed like quite the leaky ship. As soon as it was announced, the contents of the first Kombat Pack were seemingly revealed on Amazon, and itlooks like spoilers for the game’s story mode have been out there for more than two years.

As big as those leaks might have been though, the biggest one so far is a supposed roster leak that happened shortly after the game was announced. The leak, which was shared by Twitter user thethiny, said that it came “from the people who gave us the trailer before it was released, along with the people who told us story mode details”.
The leak suggested that Mortal Kombat 1’s roster would be full of characters from the 3D era, such as Havik, Reiko, Nitara, and Li Mei, alongside others like Smoke and Reptile. Considering how much Ed Boon had teased that the roster would feature lots of 3D-era content, it seemed to be legitimate.
However, that might have just been disproven by the most recent Kombat Kast. The trailer that was shown, which focused on members of the Lin Kuei, initially seemed to support the roster leak when it showed Smoke as one of the playable characters but quickly moved away from the leak when Rain was revealed as part of the roster.
Ed Boon has been teasing Rain as part of the Mortal Kombat 1 roster over the past few days, but it seemed like he might be a Kameo, as he wasn’t mentioned as part of the roster leak that seemed legitimate up until this point. However, now that we know that Rain is indeed a fully playable character alongside Smoke, it seems to have disproven that initial roster leak, as Rain wasn’t mentioned to be a playable character.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that certain factors of the roster leak aren’t true, as Smoke was included in it and is now confirmed to be a playable character, but it does mean that we can’t say that the leak is fully legitimate. While that’s a shame for everyone who was desperate to see Havik and other 3D-era characters (why?!), it does mean that we’ll be going into character reveals blind and don’t have the whole roster spoiled for us before launch.
