TheMortal Kombattimeline has been remade in the infinite wisdom of Fire God Liu Kang. Sure, he may not exactly be the best guy for the job, but at least it’s not Raiden, who must have racked up quite an amount in consultation fees to the Elder Gods.

TheMortal Kombat 1trailer hints at major characters taking alternate paths instead ofthe ones we’ve known them to take. Sub-Zero and Scorpion may not ever start their feud, Kitana and Mileena may work together, and maybe Johnny Cage may actually win an Oscar – past actions will define the future. Speaking of the past and future, an eagle-eyed MK fan has spotted something interesting in the trailer.

Hanzo Hasashi and Bi-Han – the first Sub-Zero – started their feud around the Edo period. It’s not concrete, but it’s widely considered so among fans. However, theyounger versions we see of the two in the trailer, may not actually be from the past. Over on theMortal Kombat Subreddit, CaptainKashup has spotted clues that suggest that the two are actually in modern times.

They spotted some items in the background of scenes involving the two ninjas. The first is an electric lamp, the second being a standing fan, and the third – and perhaps most concrete – item is a TV satellite dish in the shot when both of them look at the eclipse. The trailer hinted that different choices will be made in the past, but more questions have now popped up, considering that the two are in relatively current times.

Most of the replies to this post were baffled by this discovery as it threw a wrench in theirtheories for the events of Mortal Kombat 1. However, some comments jokingly suggest that Liu Kang’s timeline is one of technological wonders, even in the past.

“He better made 5G accessible in the countryside,” suggested one comment. “How else should Kung Lao play shit online? And we all know he would blame his connection for losing otherwise.” Somehow, I think the world would have been worse off if the internet was invented way before its time.

“Maybe it’s an…. ancient… sun disc. To collect the… sun waves. That’s right. I can still make it fit,” stated another comment, which was evidently clutching at straws. “Number 3 might just be Kung Lao’s hat that they were using as a frisbee and got stuck on the roof. Just saying,” said a more viable comment.

Most fans believed that the face-off between the two was happening in the past, which would result in the two becoming allies in the present day. Unless it was a misstep by those who worked on the trailer, it seems this theory will be busted once the game is out.
