As revealed by a synopsis on the officialMortal Kombatsite,Mortal Kombat 1will feature “Kameo” characters who are separate from the main roster and appear to act like assists.
Although it might feel like we’ve known about the existence of a new Mortal Kombat game for quite some time now (well,thanks to a Warner Bros. earnings call earlier this yearandtons of hints from NetherRealm, we have),but it’s actually only just been officially announced earlier today through a CG trailer. Alongside the trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, the official website was also updated to include a few details about some of the features in the game, although they raise just as many questions as they answer.

One of the most interesting things that’s mentioned on the official Mortal Kombat 1 site is a brand-new mechanic for the series that appears to be one of the big new features of the game - Kameo fighters.According to the site, these allow you to “Choose from a unique roster of Kameo fighting partners to assist you in battle”.
Now, since we’ve not actually seen any gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1 yet, it’s anyone’s guess how these assists actually function in the game, or why they’re called “Kameo” fighters, but it’s a reasonable assumption that this is teasing some kind of tag-team mechanic or, like the website says, an assist function similar to Marvel vs Capcom 3 and other team fighters.
The possibility of assists is already an interesting prospect for Mortal Kombat 1,but the FAQ on the site for the game reveals another
interesting detail that makes it a little clearer what Kameo fighters actually are. One of the questions on the FAQ asks what Kameo fighters are and how they work and the answer reads, “Kameo Fighters are a unique roster of partner characters to assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players. These characters are chosen separately from the main roster of fighters”.
Another portion of the FAQ seems to indicate just how important Kameo fighters are going to be for Mortal Kombat 1. In the section about how much the game is going to cost, the first Kombat Pass for the game is detailed and it’s revealed that five new Kameo fighters are going to be added to the game alongside six main characters, suggesting that they’re going to be supported alongside the main cast for some time to come.
From the sounds of it, Kameo fighters are going to be a way for NetherRealm to include more obscure characters who either don’t fit into the game’s story or don’t have a full moveset. This could also possibly be where we see some of therumoured third-party characters like Homelander, Peacemaker, andConan the Barbarianjoin the cast, as there are already quite a few rumoured additions for a pass that only has six characters.
