RecentMortal Kombatgames have been full of personality, with pre-fight banter added in Mortal Kombat X. Unsurprisingly,Mortal Kombat 1is no exception, with fighters using the time before the arena loads to trade barbs with one another. Well, “trade” might be a strong word, because now, they actually only get a line each before the fight begins.
This has disappointed fans, who feel like a couple of lines before a fight to the death just doesn’t have the sting that we’re used to. Many are saying that, so far, it seems likeMortal Kombat 11’s dialogue is still superior, with what we’ve seen in gameplay demos just not having the depth of the previous two games.

“Does anyone else think that the dialogue system was way better in MKX and 11?” asks Reddit user SixEightAKS. A whole lot of fans agree, saying that cutting the pre-fight dialogue from three lines to just two is a mistake.
Fans are also using it as an opportunity to share their favourite exchanges from the previous games, fearing that we won’t get banter on this level with Mortal Kombat 1’s restrictions. However, none of them have highlighted the actual best bit of dialogue from Mortal Kombat 11, which is obviously:
Mileena: A koin for your thoughts, Erron?Erron Black: Just trying to reckon why the hell you’re back.Mileena: A million souls cried out for my return.
Because let’s be honest, she’s not wrong one bit.
Having three lines of chatter before a fight also allowed for some plot details to be explained if they couldn’t make it into the main campaign. For example, we’re told the fate of Mileena’s allies from Mortal Kombat X in various bits of banter, with several referring to her squad falling apart, and one even stating that Kotal Kahn executed Tanya. It’s difficult to see how this will be accomplished in just a couple of lines, but it won’t be impossible.
So far, what we’ve seen doesn’t go into the same depths as Mortal Kombat 11, but it tells us a bit about these new interpretations of the characters. For starters, it confirms that Mileena has the throne, not Kitana, and certainly not Shao Kahn. Still, judging by the discussions since this footage was shared, it certainly seems like fans would prefer to get the full conversations we’ve had before, especially since most of the pre-fight is now taken up by mostly silent animations.
We’ll find out if the dialogue is extended in the final game when it launches on September 19.
