Mortal Kombatfans are all a little confused about the specific identities of the characters that were shown in theMortal Kombat 1reveal trailer, especially when it comes to Kung Lao, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion.

After years of speculation and teases, you’d think thatNetherRealm Studios finally revealing that its next game is Mortal Kombat 1would answer all of the questions that fans have had over the years. Well, you’d be wrong, as the reveal trailer for the next Mortal Kombat revealed that it’s a timeline reset that seems to not only have changed everyone’s personalities, but also made most, but not all, of them younger.

This has led to a decent amount of confusion regarding who each of the characters actually are. It all begins with one of the first shots shown in the trailer, which shows Raiden waking up and walking onto a field. Considering how Mortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath DLC ended with Liu Kang talking to the Great Kung Lao, many assumed that this was him and had no idea that it was actually supposed to be a human Raiden, especially considering how much younger he looks.

Twitter user TheSpineRip even had to post a photo clarifying that it’s Raidenthat is shown in the intro shot, sharing an image of the shots with the caption, “This is, in fact, Raiden with Kung Lao in this scene. Not the great Kung Lao”. Judging by the comments underneath the post, a lot of people were unaware that this was supposed to be Raiden, even though the hat, lightning in the distance, and Shinnok’s Amulet all make it clear that it’s a human Raiden.

This confusion carries over to Kung Lao as well, as it’s currently not clear if it’s the one that we knowor if it’s meant to be the Great Kung Lao. The website only calls him Kung Lao, so we really have no clue right now, but a lot of the confusion right now is stemming from the identities of the first two characters we see.

Raiden and Kung Lao are the main sources of confusion (Liu Kang, Mileena, and Kitana are thankfully pretty obvious), but it also carries over to Scorpion and Sub-Zero, who are much younger than we’ve ever seen them before. As po There is at least a positive side to the confusion, however - fan theories.

One interesting theory comes from Twitter user RealmKast, who noted that Scorpion and Sub-Zero both have the Lin Kuei emblem on their chest. They theorize that this version of Scorpion could actually be Takeda (Scorpion’s son in Mortal Kombat X), which would be an interesting twist.

Another popular point of discussion right now is the identity of the Sub-Zero that we see in the trailer. We know he’s Sub-Zero, sure, but there’s been two of them in the Mortal Kombat canon - Bi-Han and Kuai Liang.Twitter user Scotia834 points out that Sub-Zero looks olderthan Scorpion here and doesn’t have a scar, which would suggest that he’s the first Sub-Zero, Bi-Han.
