AlthoughMortal Kombatfans generally seem to like Smoke and Rain’s new designs inMortal Kombat 1, a lot of them are missing the former’s long “smoky” hair from Mortal Kombat 9.

Yesterday, NetherRealm Studios held its first Kombat Kast livestream for Mortal Kombat 1, which featured a deep dive into Scorpion and Johnny Cage, as well as a new story trailer that focused on the Lin Kuei. The most exciting thing to come from that trailer wasthe confirmation that Smoke and Rain are going to be part of the launch roster, complete with new designs that set them apart from how they’ve appeared in previous Mortal Kombat games.

Over on the Mortal Kombat subreddit, fans of the series have been sharing their thoughts on Smoke and Rain’s new designs. While the consensus so far is generally quite positive, with most loving Rain’s new wizard look and the purposeful design similarities between all members of the Lin Kuei, there’s one part of Smoke that a lot of fans are missing - his long flowing hair from Mortal Kombat 9.

Smoke was originally introduced as another palette-swap ninja, before being turned into one of the cyber Lin Kuei, which meant that we’d rarely seen him in his human form, let alone without his mask. Then, Mortal Kombat 9 opened all of our collective eyes by showing us what a smoking twink Smoke was under the mask, especially with his ashy flowing hair, something that really set him apart from the rest of the ninjas in the series.

Sadly, despite being such a key identifier for Smoke, that’s been changed to a more trendy trim in Mortal Kombat 1, something that fans instantly took note of. In the above thread, one of the main things that Mortal Kombat fans had to say about Smoke’s new look is that they want the old hairstyle back, with one of the most popular comments on the thread noting that they “miss Smoke’s flowing hair”.

Other upvoted comments include one that points out how “clean” Smoke’s hair is this time around, but that they also miss how it used to look. Some weren’t quite as kind to the new design, with one comment saying, “His new cut looks like his mum cut it with some kitchen scissors” and hoping that we get the old style as an alternate costume.

The Mortal Kombat subreddit isn’t the only place where fans are sharing their love for Smoke’s old design. Over on Twitter, there’s a lot of love going around for Smoke’s longer hair, with some fans evenmaking edits of his design in Mortal Kombat 1 that changes the trim a bit and makes him look a little closer to his previous design. I quite liked the new look, but damn that edit makes Smoke look babygirl.
