Leaked footage fromMortal KombatOnslaught has suggested that the mobile game is taking some big steps towards fixing Sindel’s character, something that’s been bothering fans of the series ever since 2009.

Over the years, the cast of Mortal Kombat has seen some big changes and twists. Sub-Zero became Noob Saibot,Scorpion has seemingly become Kuai Liang, Liu Kang has essentially taken Raiden’s place… the list could go on. While most of these changes have been positively looked upon by fans, there’s one character who has been significantly altered over the past few games and nobody has been happy about it - Sindel.

In the original Mortal Kombat timeline, Sindel was a good character and a beloved queen who was brainwashed by Shao Kahn but ultimately ended up being a hero in her endings. This element of her character was brought over to Mortal Kombat 9, but then NetherRealm Studiosdecided to put a big old retcon in Mortal Kombat 11 and claim that she was actually evil the whole timeand willingly married Shao Kahn without being brainwashed.

Although you could possibly argue that she is actually still brainwashed and just saying she isn’t, this one twist retconned her whole character across all the games and issomething that Mortal Kombat fans have vocally been against for some time. However, it seems that NetherRealm Studios was aware of the hate this decision caused, as it seems to be working towards undoing it.

As showcased by Twitter user Sri2k5, some players have managed to get early access to Mortal Kombat Onslaught, the mobile game that was announced last year and is seemingly creeping towards release after a long time of silence. In the screenshots, we can see Kitana talking to Tanya and Quan-Chi. During the conversation, Kitana says that her mother loved Shao Kahn, suggesting that the game’s plot follows the twist of Mortal Kombat 11.

However, Quan-Chi replies that she never loved Shao Kahn and her heart belonged to Jerrod the whole time, suggesting that she has been brainwashed. Sindel herself then comes to see Kitana and says that both she and her daughter are the property of Shao Kahn, which once again goes along with the original timeline’s plot and suggests that NetherRealm is trying to reverse the retcon of Mortal Kombat 11 that was so hated.

It’s not quite clear yet where Mortal Kombat Onslaught takes place in the canon and if it is indeed even canonical at all, but even if it doesn’t end up being that way, it does make it very clear that the team is aware of how poorly the Sindel twist went down and suggests that it’s not going to be trying it again in the future.
