The value ofMagic: The Gathering’sLord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth booster boxes has gone down by nearly $100, following the recent discovery of the serialised One Ring card.
Although the launch of MTG’s Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set should have just been exciting because of the introduction of cards for beloved characters like Samwise, Frodo, Gandalf, and more, the conversation has mostly been taken up by the serialised One Ring card. Only one version of this card exists in the world, causing it to have a bounty of up to $2 million, something that’s gone mainstream and even spread outside of the MTG community.

Well, as I’m sure you know by now,the One Ring card was recently pulled in Whitby, Canada, ending the search and dashing the hopes of anyone who was hoping thatan already-pringled cardwas going to make them a multi-millionaire. Wizards of the Coast has likely already made a fortune from its Lord of the Rings crossover, but it looks like the boost that the One Ring was giving it might have already started to fade.
As pointed out by Redditor alexstam123456789 on the MTGfinance subreddit, the market value of the Lord of the Rings Collector booster boxes has already seen a bit of a dip in the past few days since the discovery was made.TCGplayers chart shows that the Collector booster box was previously valued at $478.69between June 27 and June 29, just a day before the One Ring was found.
Since then, the Collector booster box has steadily been dropping in value, all the way down to $391.55, the lowest it’s been since the start of June. This confirms that the price hike that can be seen on the chart towards the end of June was likely just fuelled by collectors looking for the One Ring.
That being said, it’s worth noting that the value of these boxes has fluctuated a bit since the One ring was found. Although it did see a big drop to less than $400 at one point, TCGplayer currently has the box listed with a market value of $401.63, which suggests that it’s creeping back up a little bit. It’s doubtful that it’ll ever return to the high 400s like it previously was, but it does show that the boxes are still being sold and have value.
This could in part be due to the inclusion of the serialised Sol Rings that can also be found in Collector boosters. While these don’t fetch as high a price as $2 million, the rarer foil versions are still being sold forthousands of dollars. Despite the drop, it does seem like the boxes are still selling relatively well. Just not as well as when you might have got $2 million from them.
