Ed Boon has confirmed thatNetherRealm Studiosplans on going back toInjusticeafterMortal Kombat 1and that the team chose to make a new Mortal Kombat game because it didn’t want there to be a big gap between releases in the series.
Ever since the release of the first Injustice in 2013 was followed up by Mortal Kombat X in 2015, NetherRealm Studios has had a reliable pattern of alternating between the two series, something that led many to assume that Injustice 3 would be the studio’s next game after Mortal Kombat 11. As the recent reveal of Mortal Kombat 1 shows, that didn’t end up happening.

The choice to make another Mortal Kombat instead of a new Injustice, combined with all of the big changes that Warner Bros. has been making over the past few years, has no doubt left many NetherRealm fans worried about the future of the series. As revealed by Ed Boon on the most recent episode of The Jeff Gertsmann Show, NetherRealm plans on returning to Injustice in the future, presumably after Mortal Kombat 1.
While speaking about the reveal of Mortal Kombat 1, Gertsmann asked Boon why it’s taken so long for NetherRealm to announce its next game. Boon replied by saying that the move to Unreal Engine 4 and the impact of Covid are the main reasons why the studio has been quiet for so long. Boon then explained why the team chose a new Mortal Kombat game over Injustice, and confirmed that it plans on revisiting the series in the future.
Boon said, “We made the decision to go to Unreal before Covid hit, so we committed to that direction. The thought was that if we did an Injustice game, it would have taken even longer and been seven years between MK games. So, we said okay let’s do another Mortal Kombat game, and it was also something we wanted to do, to showcase the new graphics engine. The plan is to go back to Injustice.”
Although that’s great news for everyone who was hoping to see Batman and Superman duke it out once again, it’s worth noting that we’re still going to be waiting some time until Injustice 3. Boon has previously confirmed thatNetherRealm plans on supporting Mortal Kombat 1 longer than any other game it’s released, which means we’re probably in for a few years of DLC and updates. It’s also worth noting that, while Boon says the team plans on returning to Injustice, that’s not a strict confirmation that it’s definitely going to happen after the next Mortal Kombat.
