Ubisofthas revealed a brand-new 2DPrince of Persiagame at Summer Game Fest, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and it’s coming to Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC on January 18.

Although we’re just a few days away from Ubisoft’s own big event at Ubisoft Forward, the studio decided to bring one of its big reveals to Summer Game Fest - a brand-new 2D Prince of Persia game that redesigns the main character and takes us back to the first game’s side-scrolling perspective.

The reveal trailer gave us a look at the Lost Crown’s side-scrolling platforming and combat, which seem even faster-paced than the Prince we know from the 3D era. Although the sliding, jumping, and sword-swinging looks familiar to what we’ve seen in previous Prince of Persia games, this protagonist can slow down time, teleport around, and even grapple towards his enemies.

One of the big surprises of the trailer was the new protagonist, who isn’t actually a prince. Instead, his name is Sargon and he’s a Persian warrior that’s been sent on a quest to find the missing prince. He looks radically different from any other protagonist in the series we’ve seen so far, with a whole new skillset to boot.

Although the initial trailer was fairly short, Geoff Keighley confirmed after the reveal that we’d be seeing more of The Lost Crown at Ubisoft Forward next week, so we’re sure to find out more details on the game there. The trailer’s description notes that you’ll be able to, “Immerse yourself in rich and vibrant environments” and “discover the perfect blend of parkour, combat and puzzle-solving that characterises the Prince of Persia series”.

IGN’s article on the revealalso revealed that the game is being made by Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio behind Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. It also gives a brief story synopsis and reveals that Sargon is a Persian warrior who is on a hunt for the missing Prince Ghassan. Ubisoft also confirmed that The Lost Crown will follow a Metroidvania structure, that lets the player “explore a handcrafted world at their own pace”, which wasn’t made totally clear in the trailer for the game, but will likely be something we see more of at Ubisoft Forward.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first that we’ve heard of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Last year, gaming insider Tom Henderson reported that Ubisoft was working on a 2D reboot of Prince of Persiathat isn’t anything to do with the Sands of Time remake. Judging by that description, it seems that we’ve finally seen that project get officially revealed.
