The nextSplatoon 3Splatfest theme has been unveiled - and it’s all about ice cream flavours. An upcoming Splatoon update will also add new challenges, as shown in the trailer unveiled at theNintendo Direct.The three teams this time will be vanilla, strawberry and mint chip. Weirdly, not including the obvious best flavour: chocolate. You cowards. We’re not given a release date for the new modes unfortunately, but we’re told to look out for more info “in the future”. It doesn’t seem that they’re tied to the new Splatfest theme, so they could be a more permanent addition to the game, rather than just added for the weekend-long event.

Anyone expecting some more substantial Splatoon 3 news would have left disappointed, as this was far from a DLC update. Instead, it seems like things will be running as usual in the game for a bit longer, because if there was anything new to share, now would have been the time to announce it. Still, judging from the surprises we got at the Direct today -shadow-dropped Pikmin 1 and 2 releases,Super Mario RPG’s return, etc - we probably shouldn’t rule anything out.

We also know that the second part of the Side Order expansion is on the way, although we don’t actually have a release date. Recent word from the devs indicates that the DLC will be quite different from the offerings in the base game, so it might not be ready for a summer release, or even a 2023 release at that. We already had the first wave in February of this year anyway, so it’s not like players have been left in the dark for too long.

The next Splatfest will be with us on July 14, presumably along with the new challenges hinted at in the trailer from the Nintendo Direct. As usual, the Splatfest will run for a couple of days, concluding on July 16.
