Nierfans are an odd bunch, always on the edge and ready pounce on anything that has even the slightest whiff of a tease of a new game or secret. I’m sure I don’t need to remind any Nier fans reading of the time when they blew up social media overa hidden church level in Nier: Automatathat ended up being an elaborate hoax created by a bunch of modders. Suffice to say, they’re an enthusiatic group of people.

Well, a bunch of them are being riled up again, this time thanks to a new piece of concept art that has been shared in celebration of the recent Nier: Orchestra Concert 12024 announcement. While you may think that a random bit of concept art shouldn’t really be enough to send Nier fans into a frenzy, the image itself is rather odd and doesn’t exactly look like anything that’s actually included in any of the Nier games we’ve had so far.

The image itself can be found embedded down below and features what appears to be 2B and 9S in a snowy environment. Their clothes are tattered and they’re missing their faithful pod companions, as they’re looking into the distance at what looks like a huge version of Emil’s head. It’s all very cryptic and mysterious, just like the game series itself, and Nier fans are desperately trying to find some hidden meaning or tease about a third game.

Given that this is just a bit of concept art, you’d have thought that Nier creator Yoko Taro would potentially step in to squash any rumors, but he’s done just the opposite. Instead of calming fan expectations about this upcoming concert, Yoko Taro has done the most Yoko Taro thing possible and made a vague tweet about the art, with the words “I guess so” stirring the pot even further.

Like I said at the top, it doesn’t take much to get the Nier/Drakengard fanbase riled up, so it’s best to take this concept art at face value. Yoko Taro is a bit of a wind up merchant and he’s more than likely poking fun at the whole situation like he normally does. It would be pretty neat if a new game was announced pretty soon, but it’s best not to get your hopes up too high just yet.
