Godot quickly became known as the indie game engine with simply the number of games that have been created and launched since the engine’s 2014 open-source release. It can handle both 2D and 3D gameswith ease, and it’s known for having a much easier interface than its bigger, more popular counterparts.
So, in honor of this behemoth of an underrated engine, several games give both the range of what the engine can do and the creativity of the users who develop games with this engine. These are the best at showcasing the versatility of the Godot engine.
Updated on June 13, 2025 by Rena Darling:The ever-shifting landscape of indie development continues to explore new ideas in ways that triple-A studios don’t get to take advantage of as often. As it grows, it’s important to continue to highlight your favorite games and show support because, without that support, you would miss out on a lot of interesting passion projects. A real shame for all parties. Below is an updated list of due diligence, and we hope that a new light is shed on what the power of this underrated engine can do. Whether it’s frustrating but interesting physics, or a story about a girl who could mind her business, there’s something worth checking out.
12Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy
Some games are hard, then some games will make your blood pressure spike. Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy will make you want to throw the controller (but don’t, of course) as you fall to the bottom. Again. For the 15th time. And the cause for this? A naked man with nothing but a hammer and a dream.
Yet, while you struggle against Godot’s surprisingly great physics, the game begins to wax philosophically about the difficulty of starting over as opposed to starting something for the first time. It’s equally calming and enraging.
11SCP: Bloodwater
SCP is more than just an ‘internet thing’. It’s a phenomenon that’s vastly outgrown its humble forum beginnings. The organization’s biggest contribution though is the games. Hundreds of games coincide with hundreds of creatures currently in containment. You are the new site director, and you are immediately thrown into a base attack you’ll have to use your men to defend.
Bloodwater is a tried-and-true tower defense game. Your team is there to collect biomaterials that are worth a lot, and the cost of earning the anger of SCP-354 (The Red Pool) and it’s mutating all wildlife and sending it your way. Can you hold out?
10Project Kat: Paper Lily Prologue
The phrase ‘curiosity killed the cat’ is personified as your titular character, Kat with a K, soon learns over and over again. You are the newest member of the occult group who happens to be attempting the same ritual you snuck in yourself to perform separately. But can you trust them? Nothing is as it seems.
There are eight endings total, and all of them require a sacrifice of some sort, whether it’s your time or your blood. If scary mysteries that need solving are something that floats your puzzle-solving body, you could give this a try. Best of all, it’s free!
9Backpack Battles
Sometimes the best feeling of satisfaction doesn’t come from downing the biggest boss or finding that Easter egg you’ve heard about online. That’s all well and good, but nothing beats that feeling of finally getting your inventory just the way you like it. Every space filled, and crevice covered, you’re able to go to your next checkpoint free from worry.
In Backpack Battles, inventory mastery is the bread and butter of the gameplay, as you buy and sell items to make yourself the perfect build to win both ranked and unranked matches. The game is free and fully playable, but the other characters will be released at a later date.
8Nightmare In Squidville
Somehow, Spongebob continues toinspire a bizarre genre of PC horror gamesthat takes your nostalgia and turns it into your worst nightmares. In the episode Squidville, Squidward has had it with his overzealous neighbor and decides to move into a community of like-minded squids. It’s a peaceful slice of life until Spongebob comes to visit and brings chaos in tow.
The game takes this premise and makes it a terrifying walk inside the eerily dark community, all of its lights are off, and the streets are silent. You play as Spongebob and Patrick accompanies you as you search for your ‘friend’ to visit him. No canned bread will be enough to stop the evil that stalks you here.
7ProtoCorgi
After having his home destroyed and his friend and creator kidnapped by an unknown alien force, cybernetic Good Boy Bullet embarks on a quest to save her, no matter where she is across the cosmos. Bullet can become equipped with 27 different weapons, giving you endless combinations and possibilities to customize your doggo.
ProtoCorgi has everything you want from abullet hell game, from complicated enemy formations to overpowered, room-clearing moves. What makes this game stand out, though is its editor mode. you may create your own maps for your best boy to explore and also gain the ability to change the perspective from the default side-scrolling mode into the bottom-down perspective. The only limit to what you create is your imagination — and one dog.
6Friday Night Funkin VR
What’s better than a rhythm game withdamn good music and a cute little storyabout a boyfriend and girlfriend in love wanting to kiss but being stopped by her parents? Taking that amazing music and turning it into VR. Friday Night Funkin VR takes all the things you love about the original and puts you into the Boyfriend’s perspective while you play, height and all.
There are mods for this version that allow you to add any songs you enjoyed from the original and include songs made explicitly for the VR version. The best part about this whole deal is that the game is 100 percent free and available to download at most VR stores as well as Steam. Give it a shot.
5The Legend Of Lumina
For a game about becoming thesavior of an infested and dying world, you sure are met with an air of peace and tranquility as you solve the various puzzles around the world of Lumina. It’s your job to find the pieces of the Unicorn’s magic that you met in the beginning. You can tell something tragic is going on, as you are the only non-animal inhabitant seen in the entire game, leaving you left with magical animals.
Visually, Lumina gives you classic, top-down The Legend of Zelda vibes from the 8-bit era, but without the constant fear of a game over from enemies. The game is short but can still be quite a challenge to solve, especially the last puzzle. Still, if you are looking for a cozy time, this game will scratch that itch.
4Brotato
This bro isn’t your average potato! After the crash landing on a hostile alien planet, Brotato has to do what he can to survive the hostile environment until his fellow bros can come and rescue him. He isn’t going to go down easy, though, as this little unassuming spud can wield six weapons at once.
The gameplay is an arena-style roguelike game where you fight off waves of enemies while leveling up your potato’s stats and weapons to increase your chances of survival. As the difficulty increases, even 30 seconds can feel like forever if you’re struggling to survive. Still, if you’re in the mood for pain that’s tough but fair, you can give Brotato a fry.
3Cassette Beats
For some, being isakai’d into a world where you battle similarly to Pokemon sounds like a dream come true. Until you realize that you are stuck there with no known way to return home.Cassette Beastsdoes a fine job of scratching that Pokemon itch while providing several new mechanics and ideas that give it its own identity.
For starters, you don’t catch the monsters you battle in the traditional sense. Instead, you ‘record’ them during battle before acquiring their form for you to transform into. This leaves the recording party member vulnerable and at high risk of taking damage instead of your cassette beast. The battle system is surprisingly complex too, as battling enemies with certain elementals will create reactions that could turn the battle.
