Ever since video games have been around,so have glitches and bugs. We either hate them, laugh at them, or just attempt to ignore them depending on how bad they are. However, it may come as a surprise that some studios actually saw some bugs as an opportunity. Fate has an odd way of working out and these bugs actually gave way to some beloved features when it comes to our favourite games.

So whether it’s a glitched model that turns into a new creature or a bug that just stuck in the memory and was used for a future game, these are just a handful of video game bugs that managed to be turned into something better. We always say learn from your mistakes and so these games did.
8Minecraft’s Creeper Was A Pig
It’s one of the more infamous bug stories, butthe iconic Creeper mobfromMinecraftalmost wasn’t in the game at all. Notch had no plans for such a mob until one day when he was coding around, he had somehow accidentally made a bug where a pig’s dimensions were reversed.
So instead of being short and fat, it became tall and skinny. Notch found the model funny and liked it enough to come up with a new mob that actually had those dimensions, thus the Creeper was born.
7The Speed Of Space Invader Aliens
One of the most popular arcade games of all time, Space Invader, also was one of the first games to have a loved feature stemming from a bug. You see when you shoot the aliens in Space Invaders, the remaining start to speed up. Well, did you know that they were never meant to increase in speed?
What seems like a way to up the difficulty was actually a glitch. The processor had an easier time loading up the aliens the fewer sprites there were. As a result, this made the aliens begin to move faster. The developers liked this so much that they decided to keep it as a feature.
6Street Fighter 2 Created Fighting Game Combos
This one seems wild because you’d think combos would be the bread and butter of a fighting game (pun intended). However, it turns out combos were never actually intended to be a feature. This all began withStreet Fighter 2, as developers tweaked input controls so that special moves could be more achievable than in the first game. However, because the timing was changed for these controls, it meant players could cancel moves mid-animation to start another move.

This would stun-lock opponents and create a chain of attacks, which would be a combo. Despite some developers worried this would ruin the game’s balance, it was kept in, and future titles and other fighting games were now designed to embrace having combos.
5Super Mario Was Never Meant To Wall Jump
In the originalSuper Mariogame, players learned that you could make Mario wall jump. It’s difficult, but essentially it involved the player clipping one pixel into the top corner of a block. The game would register Mario not as being in the block but on the top of the tile, and therefore you’re able to make him jump again whilst it gave the appearance of a wall jump.
This was obviously never intentional but Nintendo must have liked it enough because later on, inSuper Mario 64, Mario can officially wall jump.
4The Team Fortress Spy Came From Quake
One of the more popular classes fromTeam Fortressis The Spy, butdespite being a great class, he almost wasn’t in the game at all. They originally came from a glitch inQuakewhere players would sometimes appear as if they were on the other team when they really weren’t.
Valve took this idea and made it an actual class in their shooter. Thus, The Spy was born with the ability to masquerade and infiltrate another team, this time without it appearing via a glitch.
Grand Theft Auto was originally neverGrand Theft Auto. Back when Rockstar Games was DMA Design, they were making a game known as Race’n’Chase, which revolved around… well, racing and chasing. However, a glitch in the police AI would make them overly aggressive, running over pedestrians, crashing cars, and doing anything they can to get you.

This was much more fun and so the game was reworked into the first Grand Theft Auto, with a focus on being a criminal and dealing with gangsters and police as DMA Design became Rockstar North.
2Giant’s Clubs In Skyrim
We all remember our first time heading over towards Whiterun and seeing a giant for the first time. We also remember trying to attack it, shoot it, firebolt it, or some other misguided action that saw one swing from the giant send the Dragonborn into the stratosphere.
Well, that wasn’t meant to happen. During development, the intention was that giants would just swing and kill your character. However, the game has a damage overflow calculation, meaning any excess damage done to you is converted to force to throw your ragdoll body. Since the giants kill you in one swing and do a lot of damage, all that excess damage is converted to force, and thus you are suddenly swinging through the sky. Instead of being patched out, however, the death is so iconic that it now remains inSkyrimto this day.
1Onimusha Influenced Devil May Cry
Capcom was working on both Onimusha andDevil May Cryat the same time when a bug in the former caught the attention of developer Hideki Kamiya. He was watching one of the developers play Onimusha and found it funny how enemies would fly into the air after getting hit.
Although this was a glitch in Onimusha, Kamiya liked it so much that he decided to use this as inspiration for Devil May Cry’s iconic air combo combat. Since then, throwing enemies into the air and shooting them to bits has become a staple of the Devil May Cry series and it all started with a bug that Kamiya thought was hilarious.
